"Hedriodiscus!" (translation: Soldier fly)

"Single shot, got a great depth of field and he stood in one spot long enough for me to really nail the compound eye detail."

Day 14 #InsectAdvent & Christmas cards are being sent/ received

Can you imagine having to write a card to this soldierfly - Parastratiosphecomyia stratiosphecomyioides. It has the longest name in the Animal Kingdom. Luckily the address is short..

I dipped on the bird I went looking for today so deep-dived into leaf litter instead : lots of these - soldierfly larva, I think; larva of one of the Lauxaniidae fly sp; larva of Fannia fly sp & likely one of the Tomoceridae springtails; & lots of tiny slime balls.

Not sure, but the general appearance is similar to the puparium of Solva marginata (Drab Wood-soldierfly). Would ideally like to see more detail, and was it out in the open or under bark? Some more info at dipterists.org.uk/soldierflies...

Soldierflies are much less well known than hoverflies but some species are highly colourful.

Sargus bipunctatus ♀ today in Bengeo garden, large attractive woodland species & last soldierfly to appear during year. @uk-soldierflies.bsky.social @flygirlnhm.bsky.social #Stratiomyidae

Had a couple of insect “lifers” today, with a Bright Four-spined Legionnaire soldierfly (Chorisops nagatomii) in the dining room, and an Eristalinus aeneus hoverfly on our Taunton patio (normally a coastal species).

This Four-barred Major Soldierfly is our second ever record on 25/7 with the previous sighting made in 2019. It's yellow and black colouring is presumed to deter predators @uk-soldierflies.bsky.social @insects.bsky.social @lgspace.bsky.social
July 29, 2025 at 8:19 AM
Correction: the 2nd is not a soldierfly but a Cheilosia sp hoverfly.

Flies from @ladywalknr.bsky.social: the hoverfly Chrysotoxum bicinctum (on the camouflage netting by Bittern Hide); soldierfly Broad Centurion (Chloromyia formosa) and a Kite-tailed Robberfly (Tolmerus attricapillus). @uk-soldierflies.bsky.social #diptera

Four-barred Soldierfly, Oxycera rara. Found early yesterday morning on hedge only metres from a housing estate in East Yorkshire. It was not bothered by me moving the leaf to try to get a better photo (even so photos not that crisp, a pity).

This is the most northerly UK record ever for Broad Centurion, Chloromyia formosa! It's been known from Orkney for at least 11 years, but this record (and photo) by Karen Leonard is the first to come from Mainland island.
