#Thanatology
Just had a thought while answers a discussion question about our society's attitudes to dying and death for my thanatology course:

Universal basic income would help us have a more communal relationship to death because we'd be able to spend time with dying loved ones & have space to grieve. 1/

Indigenous followers, I'm taking an Intro to Thanatology course and would like better resources on Indigenous cultural practices related to dying & death, both historically & currently.

The main text, Dying and Death in Canada, doesn't cover this at all well.

I tried looking for a syllabus for his old class. This is out there. It was meant to be used as a workbook to take notes during lecture. Not sure how helpful it would be/what is in it. But there is a used one out there.

Your brain seems extra spongy. Am sure you would be great with all of this.

I didn’t learn that thanatology was a thing until I was in my 40s and we had recently lost my aunt to emphysema and COPD. I really wished I had read up so I could be a better supporter and family member. Do you think that would’ve been true?

I had thanatology on my resume for a long time and I always got asked about it. It's the study of death and dying, I'm a social worker and I realized I just had to take that word off because it was so depressing to other people. But I still (rather desperately) need a job...

Id rather game end myself than become a Bachelor of medicine 😔 That shit too hard for my smol brain

But I am looking at my local uni library for books on thanatology! Or anything medical from the 1850s-1920s, aka what Daniil would've been studying from

I'm taking a thanatology course. It struck me our society's death denial informs where we are now. It makes it hard for people to accept & prepare for death. It also makes it hard for people to grieve. And for our society to make space for it.

It's fuzzy in my mind, but I think I'm on to something.

I saw a crow funeral today. All the crows in the area, about 100, were clustered on a single tree, cawing. On the ground before the tree lay a single crow, alive but dying. When I came back an hour later the crow was dead and funeral music over.

As part of the research for my books surrounds death/death ritual (thanatology), part of what results for my queries speaks to grief and loneliness and this app is intriguing in that really it appears to involve checking in on one another to ensure we're okay (and our hearts are still beating.)

My undergrad university has a thanatology department. There's no specific thanatology degree but you can get a certificate

Arlet et al. (2025) proposes a framework to study primate thanatology, addressing the need for standardized methods. It emphasizes individual responses to conspecific death using clear behavioral variables.
