A wooly bear caterpillar crossing a bunch of small rocks. It is very fuzzy-looking. It is a reddish-brown, almost orange, in the middle and black on both ends. It will eventually become an Isabella tiger moth.

Kieran found a woolybear caterpillar in the garage. Iirc, a wider brown band is supposed to signal a mild winter & a narrow band means a harsh winter. But this lil guy seems to indicate a pretty typical midwest winter to me. 1/2

Saw this little guy on a walk recently. Folklore has it the amount of brown/black will determine the severity of winter. I never recall the details.

Listen carefully, and you'll hear this Isabella Tiger Moth (Pyrrharctia isabella) buzz. She was NOT thrilled to be on my hand. These moths are the adult form of 'Wooly bear' caterpillars often seen trundling along the ground this time of year.

Found a wooly bear caterpillar in the woods the other day. The ratio of brown-to-black "fur spikes" is supposed to predict how sever winter will be, but that sounds like hokum to me. Ain't enough that they're so dang adorable?
