Hidden for 2,000+ years, a chance discovery in 1974 revealed the astounding terra cotta army that was placed in an area near Xi’an, China as part of the burial complex of Qin Shi Huang, the self-proclaimed first Emperor of China. Thousands of life-sized figures have been excavated; there are terra cotta infantrymen, spearmen, archers, officers along with bronze chariots with horses. There are also non-military figures such as acrobats, waterfowl and court officials leading experts to conclude that the site (which covers 22 square miles, much of which has not yet been excavated) was not just a protective army for the deceased leader but was actually a representation of his entire court. The warrior figures were produced with an assembly-line system, with similar body forms topped by individualized heads and customized features such as mustaches, hats, shoes, etc. The faces are individualized but are not portraits. The figures were originally brightly painted. The actual tomb of Qin Shi Huang has never been excavated, although its exact location is known.

red-orange bowl with tan accretions overall The Yang shao culture (c. 5000-3000 BCE) located in the middle region of the Yellow River (Huang he) was at its zenith in the fifth millenium BCE. A complex neolithic settlement was discovered at the village of Panbo near Xi'an in Shanxi province which became the namesake to a whole range of ceramic artifacts made in this region. Panbo phase (4800-4300 BCE) pottery is rich in shapes and decorative techniques including painting. The beauty of this relatively plain bowl, however, is based on its fine, even potting and well-proportioned profile. Thin walled and perfectly hemispherical in shape, this elegant vessel exemplifies the highest standard of hand-built ceramic production. Evidence from excavation sites around Panbo suggests that large bowls such as this were sometimes used as lids to funerary urns.

BEIJING, 26th December, 2025 (WAM) -- With the launch of the Xi'an-Yan'an high-speed railway (HSR) on Friday, China's high-speed rail network has surpassed 50,000 kilometers in operation, a landmark achievement in the country's railway transportation network, Global Times learned from China Railway. China's high-speed rail services now cover 97 percent of cities with an urban population of more than 500,000, according to a news release sent by the company.
