Story: The Wisdom of Flight

You're getting some I've never seen now, although I often see their cousins the Maui 'amakihi :)

What a fortune it was to literally pull up in the parking lot to one of the endemic Hawai’ian honeycreepers!

The O’ahu ‘Amakihi like may of its kin are threatened to critically endangered. Many are already extinct… and the sad idea I may not encounter many of these is horrifying

Not many of these birds are still around, though they make up a solid backbone of #Delta and #Hawaiian fleets. When's the last time you flew on a #B717 ?

Interesting horse this ahead of the Japanese St Leger this weekend the dam is a dual classic winner & she has already foaled a winner of the last leg of the fillies triple crown out there a bit to find on form I think, but form is temporary and class is permanent...

Happy Birdtober!

🌿 Hawaiʻi ʻAmakihi
Chlorodrepanis virens

The adaptable ʻamakihi eats insects and drinks nectar — a perfect example of resilience in the native forest. For best birding, we suggest the forests of Haleakalā & Hawaiʻi Volcanoes national parks.

Plenty of those birds may fly about and forage by themselves as well, but one little flock on the slopes of Mauna Loa was having a bad day. They just weren’t finding much in the way of food.

In 2023, August 8th was designated Hawaiian Honeycreeper Celebration Day by the Hawaiʻi State Senate.

So here's the 3 I've seen.
An ʻAmakihi, an ʻApapane, & an ʻIʻiwi. All making use of the native māmane plant.

Oricorio pom-pom are generalists, which allows them to thrive in all types of habitat and has protected their populations from the effects of habitat change. Their courtship dance is characterized by fast-paced wing movements, flapping and shaking their feathers in dynamic patterns.

Could be, but there are so many more cool birds to consider for the post.
Io, Pueo, Amakihi, I‘Iwi, Apapane, Alala, and many others, that need even more conservation effort right now, several more are about to go extinct themselves.

Meet the #ʻAmakihi, a resilient #honeycreeper endemic to #Hawaii. Its curved bill reaches deep into flowers to sip nectar and transfer pollen. Tiny, green, and engine of life for the native forests! 🐥

New chapter’s up! High up in Maui’s Haleakalā National Park, socked in by fog and existential doubt, I trailed my husband in pursuit of the ‘I’wii and Hawai’i ‘Amakihi. Was I discovering my own spark for birding—or just sorry, confused, and wondering what I’d signed up for? 🪶

I tracked this native Hawaiian Honeycreeper, also known as Oahu Amakihi, for almost two miles in the forest before it allowed me a clear shot without a million branches in the way!

'Amakihi is one of Hawaii's remaining honey creeper species. There are around 800K of them left, which may sound like a lot but not compared to over 300 million American robins. Hawaii is quickly losing all of its native birds and resident dump and his pet doge have just cut $14millon to save them.
