In general, frigates today are smaller and tend to focus on antisubmarine warfare; destroyers tend to be generalists or antiair focused. There is a lot of overlap and exceptions; different navies have different definitions that have changed over time.

Germany undertook a vastly more ambitious attempt to build submarines in modular formats. By midwar, the outdated Type VII submarine was overwhelmed by British, Canadian, and American antisubmarine warfare technology and tactics. In May 1943 alone, the Kriegsmarine lost forty-three U-boats to enemy escorts and aircraft, prompting Grand Admiral Karl Donitz to suspend submarine operations in the Atlantic. In shipbuilding, "Black May" forced the Germans to seek a new departure with the more advanced Type XXI developed by Glückauf Engineering, the principal submarine design office of the Ministry of Armament and War Pro-duction. Unlike its predecessors, which were essentially submersible torpedo launch platforms that could dive for a few hours to attack enemy ships and evade the hunters at slow speeds, the Type XXI was the world's first true sub-marine, with large batteries that enabled it to cruise underwater for extended periods and recharge them by running diesel engines in combination with a snorkel. Capable of underwater speeds of about fifteen knots, the boat was far more likely to escape convoy escorts than the 7.6-knot Type VII, and it boasted a range of 11,100 nautical miles, almost double that of older types. Informed that serial construction using conventional shipbuilding techniques could only begin in March 1945, Dönitz turned to armaments minister Albert Speer, who tasked automotive engineer Otto Merker with the development of a modular system designed to produce the first Tvpe XXIs a vear earlier 139 Merker proposed to divide submarine construction into three phases. In the first, steel fabricators like MAN Werk Gustavsburg and Dortmunder Union (some of which used concentration camp labor) produced hollow sections by bending steel plates around frames. Once implemented, phase one employed more than half of all German steel fabrication plants, which forwarded sections to fifteen shipyards like Bremer Vulkan and Deutsche Werke Hamburg, where engines, pipes, electrical systems, and other fittings were installed to form modules in the second phase. Third, the modules went to Blohm & Voss, AG Weser, and Schichau-Werke Danzig for final assembly into complete submarines. Merker's plan to manufacture complex preassemblies and modules in dispersed locations was the single most ambitious serial production scheme in World War II naval work, far beyond the parameters of sectional construction methods employed by the Americans and the British. 140 Merker proposed to divide submarine construction into three phases. Blohm also complained that phase two yards frequently failed to pressure-test pipes, fittings, and valves, and often delivered incomplete modules to final assembly yards. (Merker responded to such criticism by accusing Blohm, a Nazi stalwart, of defeatism and sabotage of the German war effort.) 44 In the end, the three final assembly yards spent an average of 120 days fixing production mistakes, three weeks longer than it took them to assemble the boats. Perhaps surprisingly, given German industry's reputation for precision engi-neering, its steel fabricators proved far less capable of producing satisfactory sections than their counterparts in the United States and Britain, where shipbuilders rarely complained about faulty preassemblies for destroyer escorts, frigates, and landing craft. Contradicting another bit of conventional wisdom, procurement and production planning in Germany was far less organized than in the United States, and there was chaos throughout the program. In the end, only two of the one hundred Type XXI submarines completed by 1945 were deployed to the Atlantic, and neither scored a hit. The most fortunate side effect of this colossal waste of resources was that it prevented Germany from resuming the Battle of the Atlantic late in the war.145

On 5 December 1941 the second of many naval tragedies of Operation CRUSADER took place, when ABV Chakdina was struck and sunk by an aerial torpedo at 2100 hours. She carried 600 crew, Axis POWs and wounded Allied soldiers. Over 400 men died.

NEW ZEALAND DISASTERS AND TRAGEDIES THE SINKING OF SS CHAKDINA TORPEDOED IN THE MEDITERRANEAN SEA BY ENEMY ACTION WITH THE LOSS OF 89* NEW ZEALAND SOLDIERS FRIDAY 5 DECEMBER 1941 Late in the afternoon of 5 December 1941 the SS Chakdina left Tobruk Harbour, Libya carrying approximately 380 wounded Allied soldiers, 100 German and Italian Prisoners of War and 120 crew. A number of other Allied soldiers also boarded the ship. They were to be transported back to Egypt. At least 123 New Zealanders were aboard the shop when it set sail. Just after 9 pm an enemy plane released a torpedo, which exploded in one of the after holds of the Chakdina. She sank within three and a half minutes. There was very little chance of escape, except for those who were not wounded or only lightly wounded, and who were in a favourable position at the time. Forty one of the New Zealanders aboard including a small number of the wounded were picked up by the destroyer HMS Farndale and the antisubmarine/minesweeper HMS Thorgrim. The Farndale took most of the survivors to Alexandria where on 7 December, the casualties were admitted to the detachment of 3 NZ General Hospital there. The Thorgrim took the survivors it had onboard to Mersa Matuh. The sinking of the Chakdina was the only major misfortune in the evacuation of New Zealand wounded during World War Two.

He really loved Keflavik in Iceland even though he thought the locals were mega racist and he had to help the black USN/USAF/RCAF boys scale the wire

That technology would later find its way into civilian consumer devices in the 1980s, such as Parker Brothers’ Merlin, Milton Bradley’s Simon, and Coleco’s Electronic Quarterback.

When the B-59 surfaced, US antisubmarine warfare aircraft harassed it with searchlights, flares, and tracer fire. Savitsky and others on the bridge panicked, believing they were under attack. He ordered the 10-kiloton torpedo readied for launch and turned the submarine toward the destroyer USS Cony.

The last masted sloops in the RN were the Cadmus class (1903).
The type name was revived for smaller ships in WW1, such as the Flower class, and was retained as a ship type in the 1930s and into WW2, such as the Black Swan class.
There were also corvettes and frigates!
Cadmus class sloop HMS Cadmus. Designed for colonial service. Flower class sloop HMS Geranium (1915). Designed as minesweepers and later used for antisubmarine work in the First World War. HMS Black Swan (1940). Purpose built convoy defense ship, carrying six 4" guns with a top speed of 20 knots.
