Honourable mention to the one audiologist who said

"I found black ones, to match your whole wardrobe"

circa 2022, when I first trialed hearing aids
new hearing aids phrases #1:

"Whoa, I heard that with such HEARING @calloflunacy.bsky.social !"

"My voice sounds like I'm talking through a space helmet"

"Sorry I couldn't hear you, I was looking at the thing you just pointed out"

Ok so… my dad was an audiologist (retired now) and one of the few good things I can say about him is he had some kick ass remedies for all things ear related. He also had a can of this foam stuff with him all the time so he could make custom earplugs on the fly.

You forgot audiologist.

Ben. Go to an audiologist, many in town. Get hearing aides. Even if 100% loss on the one side, at this point pretty sure the mic on that side can mix in to output on the other side.

The tech’s good, I’ve had them for 5 years, Max has had them for 3, it’s like glasses use the tech that’s available.

Waiting on a referral to an audiologist to get stuff tested
February 13, 2026 at 9:53 PM
sometimes i forget i have moderate hearing loss. one would think it’s nerve damage from years of playing loud ass shows, but it’s actually the opposite: i can’t hear below a certain frequency, something the audiologist who dx’d it in my teens said i was likely born with.

r is getting tubes in her ears! tbh i'm relieved it's gonna be that simple. she's been essentially nonstop sick since august and she's been experiencing some hearing loss (audiologist says nothing structural is wrong). i can't wait for this to be over

I had a hearing test today. There's been some mild hearing loss since my last visit. This news didn't bother me at all. What DID bother me was being told it was two years since my last hearing test. Not one year, as I'd assumed. I made the audiologist double check. Yep. Two years. Bloody hell.

Yes, thanks, he does. TBH I’m surprised he’s getting on as well as he is, so that’s a credit to the audiologist I guess. This morning’s ’too loud’ is his waterproof walking trousers, which I’ve told him for months are loud 🤣

(I should maybe confirm, he’s happy for me to post this stuff).

George will be at the centre of an upcoming storyline, where he will be getting a hearing aid due to partial hearing loss.

Fury, whose real name is Jodie Ounsley, who was born deaf, will star in the show as George's audiologist.

Does your husband have a follow up appointment booked so the audiologist can turn down the frequencies that are too loud?

A good audiologist will always start off with the settings low for newbies. Then gradually increase volume.
February 13, 2026 at 8:47 AM
I was going to say the same. Get the ENT referral. It's their expertise. Or see an audiologist (not a hearing instrument specialist).
February 12, 2026 at 10:36 PM
yeah i meant find someone local, in my experience the molds/plugs aren't always comfortable on the first try, an IRL audiologist makes the process of perfecting them a lot faster

As someone who used to be in the auditory world, I don't have brands (we used non-custom Etymotic plugs and equipment) but make sure to have an audiologist do the fitting. Any school with an aud school will have students able to do them for cheap too.
February 12, 2026 at 4:34 PM
well the audiologist makes the mold no?
February 12, 2026 at 4:33 PM
kinda related: i have custom-made IEMs, and I can't stress enough how important it is to have an audiologist on hand, because there's a high chance they won't fit perfectly the first time

i had mine re-done 3 times

If it didn't seem loud for you...? Go see an audiologist.

At our age, hearing starts to go for some folks.
