Pueblo public health provides warning after dead skunk tests positive for Avian Influenza
PUEBLO, Colo. (KOAA) — The Pueblo Department of Public Health and Environment is sharing a warning for residents on how to keep their animals safe after a dead skunk tested positive for avian influenza. The animal was found near the Arkansas River and Pueblo Boulevard and reported on Wednesday, February 4. On Tuesday, February 11, test results showed the skunk tested positive for the virus. The public health department wanted to remind residents of how to keep themselves, pets, and livestock safe. Avian influenza, also commonly known as bird flu, is a virus that traditionally spreads from animal to animal. But there are rare cases of humans contracting the virus after usually coming into direct contact with infected birds or other infected animals. The public health department is encouraging people to be vigilant and provide some safety tips if they are concerned about an animal that might be infected. Exposure to infected, sick, or dead animals is the main risk factor for getting avian influenza. Exposure to contaminated surfaces is another risk. Do not touch surfaces or materials contaminated with saliva, mucous, or animal feces from birds or other animals with confirmed or suspected avian influenza A virus infection. Wear...

Vaccination against H5 HP avian influenza virus leads to persistent immune response in wild king penguins
Permits to implement the experiment were granted from the French Ministry of Research (APAFIS #45548-2023102712468223) after evaluation by the Comité Régional d’Ethique d’Occitanie and from Préfecture des TAAF (A-2024-95) after evaluation by the Conseil de l’Environnement Polaire and Conseil National de la Protection de la Nature. After the suspicion of HPAI emergence on Crozet, permits were granted by the Préfecture des TAAF to pursue eco-epidemiological fieldwork (A-2024-144). Model species and study population The king penguin is a long-lived colonial seabird, breeding in colonies that can reach tens to hundreds of thousands of individuals, with an extended reproductive cycle of ca .14 months35,60. A single egg is laid, followed by an incubation time of 54 days and an extended rearing period of c.11 months. Partners share alternatively the incubation of the egg, then the care of the chick, until its full thermal emancipation (around 30–40 days post-hatching). Chicks are then left ashore in the colony by their parents for several months before fledging to sea at around 300 days post-hatching. Once the chicks are emancipated, they often gather in groups (‘crèches’) to withstand the harsh conditions of the Austral winter. Over that time period, they can be captured, resighted and recaptured,...

Preexisting flu immunity may offer baseline protection against avian influenza
Are seasonal flu antibodies also effective against avian flu? A team from the University of Geneva (UNIGE) has shown that a specific type of antibody associated with the former virus - already present throughout the population - may offer baseline protection against the latter. However, the level of protection varies depending on age and vaccination history. Published in Nature Communications, these findings provide valuable insights for anticipating a potential avian influenza pandemic. Circulating in many regions of the world - including Switzerland - the avian influenza A(H5N1) virus spreads primarily among birds. Recently, however, several cases of transmission to cattle and subsequently to humans have been reported in North America (71 cases in the United States), reigniting concerns about the risk of a future pandemic. A variant belonging to a specific evolutionary lineage - clade 2.3.4.4b - is drawing particular attention from epidemiologists because of its high virulence. Several studies have shown that pre-existing immunity to seasonal human influenza viruses can influence the severity of H5N1 infection. We have all been exposed to human influenza viruses and therefore carry antibodies against them, many of which share a common genetic basis with H5N1. Some of these antibodies - known as cross-reactive...

Biosecurity measures tightened across Namakkal poultry farms amid avian influenza concerns
NAMAKKAL: Following a statewide advisory issued by the state government after avian influenza was detected among birds and unusual bird deaths were reported in certain parts of the state, poultry farms in Namakkal district have intensified biosecurity measures as a precautionary step. Although no outbreak has been reported in the district, farm owners and authorities are taking additional safeguards to prevent any possible threat to the poultry hub, which plays a crucial role in egg production and exports. Officials said Namakkal's poultry sector remains on alert due to the highly contagious nature of avian influenza and the potential risk of transmission through movement of people, vehicles and materials. As part of preventive measures, sanitation activities have been strengthened, entry into poultry farms has been restricted, and monitoring has been tightened across the district to ensure that the controlled farm environment is not compromised. Valsan Parameswaran, secretary of the All India Poultry Product Exporters Association, said that while biosecurity measures are strictly followed throughout the year, extra caution is exercised whenever advisories or alerts are issued. He said poultry farmers, farm owners and officials collectively step up preventive efforts to ensure that the rapidly spreading disease does not affect the Namakkal...

Tamil Nadu government issues advisory after avian influenza detection in crow samples
Following the detection of H5N1 avian influenza (bird flu) virus in samples collected from a dead crow in Chennai, the Directorate of Public Health and Preventive Medicine has issued an advisory for the general public. “Avian influenza rarely spreads to humans,” said Director of Public Health A. Somasundaram. The advisory reiterates that avian influenza is a viral disease that spreads from an infected bird to other birds, and that transmission to humans is rare. However, it notes that those who handle birds, especially sick and dead birds, and those who work in slaughterhouses must exercise caution. Those with flu-like symptoms such as cough, cold, fever, and difficulty in breathing must seek medical assistance at the nearest government health facility. Residents have been urged to inform the Animal Husbandry Department of any unusual bird deaths in their locality and maintain personal hygiene measures such as hand washing and also ensure that the environment around them is clean. In terms of food, any eggs or meat that is not fully cooked or improperly cooked should be avoided. Residents must also avoid travelling to areas where an outbreak of avian influenza has been reported. The advisory also cautions residents not to believe in...
