In college, a guy named Dan lived on my floor and had wildlife pictures on his wall. This bird was one of them, so my friend and I ran up and down the hall yelling that Dan had pictures of Boobies on his wall. He was mortified. It still makes me laugh to think of it.

🌎 Blue-footed booby (Sula nebouxii) The blue-footed booby is a medium-sized seabird with distinctive bright blue webbed feet, brown wings, and a white underbelly. They inhabit tropical and subtropical regions of the eastern Pacific Ocean, breeding on arid, rocky islands from the Gulf of California to Peru, with a large population in the Galápagos. Known for their elaborate courtship rituals, males display their blue feet in a high-stepping dance to attract females. They are monogamous during a breeding season and nest on the ground. Their diet consists mainly of fish, which they catch by plunge-diving from significant heights. Two subspecies are recognized. In Isles of Refuge, the first book solely devoted to the Northwestern Hawaiian Islands, field biologist Mark Rauzon shares his extensive, first-hand knowledge of their natural history while providing an engaging narrative of his travels. Braving seasickness, bad weather, and biting bird ticks, he journeyed from Nihoa to Kure to study and photograph plants and animals for the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service: rare palms, sharks, turtles, seals, and thousands of birds–finches, terns, petrels, noddies, shearwaters, curlews, boobies, tropicbirds, ducks, and albatrosses, or “gooneys,” famed throughout the Pacific for their flying prowess and bizarre breeding rituals.
