Portland continues to support the cruise industry by welcoming an increased number of ships in 2026.
One would think that a city which just increased their minimum wage would not want to support an industry paying their crews $2.50 an hour.

Carnival Cruises is paying its crew as little as $2.50 an hour to work on its Australian cruise ships. Join the rally at 8am on Wed 21st Jan, Station Pier, Port Melbourne, to show Carnival Cruises that we won’t accept this sort of practice in Australia.

“…the land, the air, and the water are not ours to use without thought. They are ours to protect.

We are not owners. We are stewards. And together, we can take meaningful action.

That is why we are working with advocates to explore a ban on cruise ship scrubbers.”

“As ship numbers surge, so does their pollution. It is imperative that we act now. It is no longer acceptable to allow the cruise industry to pollute Portland with impunity. We just need the courage to demand this change.”

A simple solution to reducing cruise ship air & water pollution that is available to every port community.

It is time to make cruise lines accountable for destroying our air & water & demand they use cleaner fuels while at berth.

Unfortunately, CruiseMaine sees you as a gold mine for the cruise lines and they are going to do everything they can to bring in more ships (since they lost Bar Harbor).
We’re very worried for you!

No. Just no.
Two massive cruise ships.
Over 8k people on board.
Millions of gallons of toxic scrubber wash being dumped into our beautiful Casco Bay.
When does it end?

Damn, it is the Zuiderdam in Portland today with an F rating in water quality compliance from @foeus.bsky.social
because it uses a scrubber to turn air pollution into water pollution.

An independent organization paid for by our taxes that claims to seek “sustainable cruise ship tourism” that was forced to delete their environmental resource page because of disinformation.

CruiseMaine is a lobbying organization for the $66 Billion cruise industry.
CruiseMaine (paid for by our tax dollars) hasn’t figured out yet that cruising will never be sustainable!

“CruiseMaine, part of the Maine Office of Tourism, is a membership organization dedicated to the support, education and promotion of Maine communities seeking sustainable cruise ship tourism.”

Fabulous news for Bar Harbor!

The 1,000 cruise ship passenger cap was upheld by the First Circuit Court of Appeals.

Bar Harbor has fought long & hard to determine what their city will be & massive cruise ships have been ousted.

BAR HARBOR, 8.11.25 - The First Circuit Court of Appeals in Boston today upheld a large portion of a lower court’s decision to uphold the cap voted on by citizens here in 2022 for a 1,000 daily limit for disembarking passengers from cruise ships.
