Profile: netsafe Tory Whanau Former Mayor of Wellington/Current corporate affairs consultant Member since 2025 I care deeply about the online safety of marginalised communities, especially women, women of colour and tangata whenua. Too often, the systems designed to protect us fall short. I'm driven to help strengthen the Harmful Digital Communications Act so that it's more robust, truly safeguards victims of abuse and harassment, and continues to evolve with the realities of the digital world Netsafe plays a vital role in leading that change, and I want to contribute my passion, my lived experience, and my understanding of how online harm impacts real lives to help shape a safer, more equitable digital environment for everyone. As former Mayor of Wellington, I bring extensive governance and leadership experience across complex public, regional, and corporate settings. I chaired the Council that delivered a $12 billion Long-Term Plan, was a key member of the Water Committee and AoG group establishing the new water entity for the Wellington region, and collaborated with fellow leaders through the Wellington Mayoral Forum. I also served on the Boards of Wellington Airport and Täwhiri Arts, strengthening my expertise in strategic oversight, stakeholder engagement, and cross-sector collaboration. Alongside my governance experience and my role as Chief of Staff for the Green Party during the 2017 and 2020 coalitions, what I bring most importantly is lived experience. For three years, I was the target of a sustained, gendered disinformation campaign that sought to destroy my character while I served as Mayor. The content was often violent, dehumanising, and deeply harmful. Having personally engaged with Netsafe through the Harmful Digital Communications Act process, I experienced firsthand the value of their support and advocacy. I now want to use that experience to help strengthen both the legal protections available to victims and the services Netsafe provides.

The European Commission on Wednesday gave the go-ahead for a group of four countries to establish a common organisation for building open source alternatives to much-used (non-European) software. France, Germany, Italy, and the Netherlands will work to develop open, European alternatives in “key areas” such as AI, cloud, cybersecurity, and – curiously – social networks. Regional lawmakers are striking a more serious tone on digital sovereignty in the face of growing geopolitical concern about over-reliance on US tech platforms. The Digital Commons European Digital Infrastructure Consortium (EDIC) will also work on a “sustainable financing mechanism” to support production and maintenance of such software across Europe, a press release said. The announcement will be music to the ears of Europe’s open source industry, which has previously called for a €350 million fund to support important open source projects. Luxembourg, Slovenia, and Poland will also participate in the organisation as observers, per the press release, which said that other EU countries are interested in getting involved. EDIC will be officially inaugurated on 11 December in The Hague. The four founding countries submitted founding papers back in July.
