Clarke's earlier novel Earthlight had what's basically a lunar railgun weapon and dates back to 1955.

(I remember noting back when I was doing EM launcher reasearch in the 90s that the technologies countries worked on were influenced by the SF that scientists read in their teens.)

Lunar-based EM launchers are not a new thing; we were talking about them seriously in the early 90s when I was doing railgun research.

Clarke's Maelstrom II is one of the earliest coilgun stories, he also had railgun-like launchers in Earthlight, Heinlein had coils in The Moon Is A Harsh Mistress.

For sure. I read Earthlight, for instance, at 17 (1986) & found it a thrilling spy adventure. I read it again in my mid-40s & was less enthusiastic about the plot, though I did like the descriptive elements quite a lot.

Feel free to join the community on the website. That's my primary forum for discussion. As for your comments about ratings, please note that I've been posting reviews since 2010.... that Earthlight review is one of the first I posted. My taste and views evolve... like yours.

I just perused a few of the titles you've reviewed. I'll definitely check them out in the near future.

I'm a bit surprised you have Earthlight rated so highly. I'm a Clarke fan, second to none, but always regarded Earthlight as rather minor Clarke. I will read your review with interest.

Yeah two recap movies, Earthlight and Moonlight (iirc)

Bit of a genius, Pete Cooke. I'll have to fire up a few emulators and give Tower of Babel and Earthlight another go - and Micronaut One, because that passed me by at the time.

When Earthlight thins to a rumor, we move as one orbit,
soft, inevitable, and whole,
making a night that even the dark remembers.

It just dawned on me that Chaldeas is Earth's replica and we are observing its light to ensure civilization continues. Earth. Light. Earthlight is also known as Da Vinci glow.
Makes sense why Da Vinci is one of the first to respond to Chaldea's summon, hm?
