Without spoiling it for people who haven't gotten to it yet, I had the exact same thought you did about THAT character's new look. I'm definitely a fan. Heck, we got pretty close to it back in '07!

He’s no chemist like Elita-One so he has to get someone like Shockwave or even…regrettably…Starscream to formulate and program new venoms for him to use.
