more like three billbullshit this movie pissed me off. Frances McDormand's AMAZING performance carries this movie so high up it even convinced people it was an oscar nom but its writing is so ass it makes you cringe and wince and just end up extremely confused. Kind of evil, even.
the amazingly talented Frances McDormand acting her heart out in a scene that's honestly not that great in writing but feels amazing. Like. she feels like a real woman who this all happened to. there's a ton of presence to her voice and mannerism and just being on screen. gosh. she's amazing, have I said that already? Woody Harrelson and Frances McDormand sharing a scene that's frankly baffling because she's clearly mogging his sub-par performance. He really did get the worst writing. The bed scene is just. ugh. who writes like that. about sex. in a movie like this??? Also the movie is about a very sensitive topic yet it's like, hardly addressed? It's a critique about how it can create shock when used but is not ever discussed, and yet is a movie that uses it for shock but never discusses it. So weird.

As a small child, Ilya had believed, that the world was made of snow. He believed that the gods had curled up a fistfull of dirt and snow and formed it to an oddly shaped egg, like a snow ball, and started to populate it with little people. He believed they put dents in them for oceans and pebbles for mountains and then they watched it populate itself, under their watchful gaze. It was years later that he learned that the world wasn't created by anyone, but existed purely by happenstance - at least the tall man with the spindle fingers told him that, as he caught him in his laboratory, staring at the model planets. He let his fingers flick against the rings around one of them and watched them spin, like ripples in a pond. He also learned that there were no gods or deities, and if there are, they were evil and uncaring. There was so much pain and hatred and evil in this world, that surely the gods would fix, if they were there, no? It had made a lot of sense, especially with the numb feeling that occupied his arm. He had massaged his wrist, thumb pressing into the darkening skin, and nodded along when the tall man with the spindle fingers explained it to him. He explained that the only higher being he should trust was their new empress, their tsar, Lada the Eternal - the woman that freed this country from the tyrannical grip of a mad king. It was her, who took personal interest in little Ilya, back when they still called him Nikita, when the village elders threw him at her feet as she rode through their little farmer's town. They had begged her to allow them to kill him, him and his cursed arm. It had brought starvation and plagues upon the land, it killed everything it touched, it was dangerous, and so was the boy. He hadn't thought he'd live to see another day. Ilya had no trouble believing the tall man with the spindle fingers, because both of them had been there. Ilya remembered the feeling of cold mud on his face, mixed with hot tears streaking down his cheeks, he remembered the pleas of the villagers and he remembered the Captain ask, if the villagers really asked if they were allowed to kill a child. He remembered a heated fight, that ended when _she_ rose her icy voice. "Rise," she had said and it had taken him a moment to realize that she was talking to him. He raised his head and looked upon the most etherial being he had ever seen. Her skin was white as snow and so were her hair. Her eyes were blue, and clear, like pure ice. She handed him a gloved hand. He didn't dare take it. When he was on his feet, barely a couple years old, she didn't avert her eyes, instead, she took him in, in his dirty rags, the fabric hanging from his arm, barely conceiling what was hidden beneath. Then, the tall man with the spindly fingers had appeared next to her, a curious expression on his infallen face. "That's him," he had said and the etherial woman smiled, without teeth. Then, she pulled a knife from her belt, and Ilya thought that had been it. He had closed his eyes, remembered his friend, the stray dog, and how he tried so hard not to touch him, but he had failed. He was dead not shortly after. He felt the hilt of a knife in his palm, and opened his eyes, instinctively closing his fingers around it. "This is a gift, from me, to you." Her voice was like ice, but it didn't hurt to listen. It was hypnotizing. "There are more gifts for you, from where I come from. Would you like to accompany me?" He had nodded, he had nodded and she had the tall man with the spindle fingers wrap his arm in a proper bandage, before she had lifted him onto her horse, in front of her. She offered him a sweet, as they made their way back from where she had come from. He hadn't seen the hand gesture she gave the captain, but he heard the screams of the villagers as they rode off, burning the village down in their dust. He couldn't help but smile.

Yep, these are the people whose parents and grandparents stood up against the Evil Empire, were fighting against commies in Korea and Vietnam. Those people were immigrants mostly from Europe and somehow the roots were lost, having a burger and beer is more important that fighting against GOP morons.
