smartphone & social media adoption was coincident with a huge global economic crash & its wake. increasing inequality, stagnant wages, sky-high house prices. if you want to counter the effect of the change in social attitudes you need to incentivize way, way harder on the economic end

The 124's global change of identity had been triggered by Fiat's early '80s decision to exit the US market . The company's former sports models were now offered by a firm owned by Malcolm Bricklin (later the US Yugo importer), renamed the Pininfarina Spider and Bertone X1/9).

Worth reading by @edwardluce.bsky.social. America has been the linchpin holding the global system together. The system is now exposed to multiple tensions -- China's rise to superpower status, climate change, the economic revolution of AI -- and Trump is simultaneously pulling the pin out.
"The world until recently believed that US-China decoupling was on the way. It turns out that most countries are now scrambling to de-risk from America." My column.

International Space Station gets new commander: Crew
The International Space Station (ISS), a beacon of global scientific collaboration orbiting 400 kilometres above Earth, recently marked a significant transition as it welcomed a new commander. This routine yet crucial change in leadership underscores the continuous human presence in low-Earth orbit and the seamless operational rhythm of humanity's most ambitious off-world outpost. Veteran Roscosmos cosmonaut Oleg Kononenko officially took the helm, assuming command from European Space Agency (ESA) astronaut Andreas Mogensen.

The last big global change like this was the collapse in crime between the 80s and 90s and it’s well understood at this point that there isn’t really any one thing that explains that. The decline in infant mortality I believe is similar. This will be the same.

What are PM @mark-carney.bsky.social's top challenges as he jets to China today? The @thestar.com has a tight summary: “how to expand markets for Canadian products — but not to the point of overdependence; how to align with China on big global challenges like climate change..."
Mark Carney seeks a reset with China amid Donald Trump’s chaos and global tensions. Can he succeed where others have failed?
The prime minister is Beijing-bound to “elevate engagement” on trade, energy, agriculture and international security. Among the risks is making compromises that could lead to long-term problems.

Anyway. Because she focuses on the fundamentals of power, Susan Strange is an invaluable starting point for understanding global politics in times of extreme change, including as it relates to the tech industry's elevated role. Everyone should be reading States and Markets at the very least.

Other than it appears that the article was written using AI, the report doesn’t highlight climate change projects so massive in scale that they could have greater, positive global impact. Decisions of a few don’t stifle the efforts of many. There’s still a lot of good happening.

It's the same here in Canada but the only way to change is to be the squeaky wheel who is like "I'm not on Facebook or Instagram. How do I get info?"

It's insane a corporation has such a global hold on information and restricts it only to users
