COPD severity alone does not explain cardiac changes. In the MESA COPD Study, emphysema subtypes from CT were tied to specific hemodynamic profiles on MRI, pointing toward more precise targets for therapy. More from @uclaradiology.bsky.social:
CT Emphysema Subtypes and Cardiac Hemodynamics Estimated on MRI
In this case-control study of predominantly mild-moderate COPD, greater ePAP was specific to the combined bronchitic-apical emphysema subtype whereas the diffuse emphysema subtype and COPD severity…

6/ Take-home: neuronal and hemodynamic measures of brain function can dissociate under psychedelics, which has huge implications for interpreting human imaging data when under the influence of psychedelics.

2/ After DOI (blue trace, right), neurovascular coupling (the link between brain ⚡️and blood 🩸signals) went off script.
The hemodynamic response got tighter—and even sprouted an acausal feature (suggesting an emergent vasculo-neuronal relation!). Wild stuff. 🤯

The hemodynamic response to neural activity gets tighter. Which is weird! And honestly not exactly what I expected.
My favorite part is that we saw very similar changes in my human psilocybin fMRI data!

Padawer-Curry and team recorded neuronal and hemodynamic (blood-based) signals simultaneously before and after giving a psychedelic to mice. Surprise: they diverge.
In simple terms: the normal link between neurons firing and local blood flow is distorted.

Led by Nusrat Sadia Khan, our team showed that cardiac digital twins can reach hemodynamic convergence in just 1–2 heartbeats, cutting computational costs and enabling real-time, scalable cardiovascular modeling.
