“Aella--” “What did Stafford want?” Her words came out quick and insistent to interrupt my thoughts. My eyes followed a bead of sweat trickling down her neck, disappearing under her armor. The way it glistened on her golden-sienna skin made her shimmer like amber in the falling sunlight. “To take me to my father, who is angry with me. Again.” Rolling my eyes, I had to smile when I saw the dismay on her face. That look of disappointment that only Aella could have, exasperation with my every behavior. “Why?” she asked, almost hesitantly, as if she wasn’t sure she wanted to know. “Because I told old Mrs. Hackett to go to—” “Camilla!” A small smile flickered over her lips that even she couldn’t contain. “What? I’m tired of hearing the minutiae about ourillion history. Yes, I get it, they were the evil warrior gods who were here before the humans saved the kingdom, blah, blah, blah.” I rolled my eyes. Aella studied my face without speaking, and I could have sworn that her eyes lingered on my lips for an instant. It passed when our eyes met again; hers were unreadable, calm. “That is the third tutor this month.” “Yes, well, you know how they are.” I tilted my chin in the air, looking down my nose at her. “I know how you are,” she corrected. For some reason, the words made me shiver. Aella’s gaze wandered slowly up and down my body, checking to make sure that I was okay. “How’s that?” I asked. Her eyes locked on mine. That look made something in me feel heavy and warm all over. “Wicked. Disobedient.” Her voice was soft, somehow teasing. I ran my tongue over my lips, unable to look away from her. “What does that make you?” I whispered. “Frustrated, mostly,” she said shortly, finally looking away. “Let’s get you somewhere safe.”

Mike was a nice enough guy. Strong, patient, and respectful of clients. He also backed any calls she made when it came to people to kick out, but he also had an ego the size of the Darpana River, and a brain to match. He was smart. Knew a lot about life in Sehore before the LeQuin took over, and the stories he told of his Eponte heritage made her want to sit him down with a beer and let him talk about it all. The downside was he tended to want to be right, even on topics he wasn’t as informed on. Vola cleans the bar and dishes for the 10th time that night, overhearing Mike rant about Pre-LeQuin Dwarvish runes and something about Sudoku. Wali calls her out from behind the bar, gesturing to join them in the corner booth that served as their roost in the bar. A sudoku grid is slid in front of her. Wali’s wife Ahn-me watches her intently with those brown eyes that flash green randomly. Her runes tingle as Wali’s palpable excitement beams towards her.
