At Yale University’s Art Gallery is the shrine to the god Mithras known as the Mithraeum from Dura-Europos, dating to 168-69 CE. It don’t care much about Mithras but do adore the Palmyrene archers in the Roman army who renovated it in 209-211 CE & added some mean mugging animals (pic is my own). 🐴
The Mithraeum A shrine to the god Mithras, the Mithraeum at Dura-Europos was commissioned in A.D. 168-69 by Palmyrene archers serving in the Roman army. It was renovated and enlarged in A.D. 209-11. The reconstruction on view here represents the third and final phase, dating to around A.D. 240. Unlike most Mithraea, which were underground to commemorate the god's birth in a cave, the Dura Mithraeum was built into a private house. The cult of Mithras attained popularity in the Roman period among soldiers and merchants. Restricted to men, it was a mystery religion thought to include initiation, ritual banquets, and the promise of salvation after death. The primary cult image was the tauroctony, or Mithras slaying the Cosmic Bull, often paired with an image of Mithras banqueting with Sol, god of the sun (as seen in the painting at left. Other common images included events from the life of Mithras and zodiac signs. While the subjects depicted in most Mithraea are similar, style and composition vary. The Dura Mithraeum contained two tauroctony reliefs, one above the other. The side walls showed Mithras as a mounted archer in a presentation that would have resonated with the Palmyrene archers who founded the shrine. I'll also remind that Spain didn't have worker protections either AND labor unions were illegal--as in "you could actually be disappeared for merely being a member of an unapproved labor union or political organization"--they still did it because after Atocha it was literally life or death

What do I have as meaning in my life as an atheist?

I don't believe in life after death, but do believe in life before death. I believe in humanity. I find all kinds of meaning in life through personal relationships and contributing to society. I also enjoy the real world around me.

Careful. I had panic attacks after 4 weeks of non-stop life or death decisions before my Dad died. Thought I was having a heart attack, couldn’t breath…bad stuff.
Serenity Prayer & Xanax got me through. Unfortunately Xanax puts me to sleep w/in 20 minutes so it had limited use, but it helped.

The death tolls of Akron and Macon were dramatically different, though, as after the Akron crashed the crew of the Macon was issued life jackets. (Herbert Wiley, the CO of the Macon, was one of three survivors of the crash of the Akron. He only lost two of his crew when the Macon crashed.)

I understand where my oldest is coming from,” serious green eyes, so similar to his own, bore into him. “What do you suggest we do? The emperor needs a hostage in order to keep us in line, nevermind how many times we try to express to him that we mean no harm.” “Shinomiya-sama, still, to call it a hostage situation…” Gen waved off Hasegawa’s weak admonitions with his hand. “Of course it will be painted as an amenable match for all parties involved, after all a Shinomiya could very well be the next empress. Doesn’t change the fact that Kikoru is not even 10 yet, old man.” “As I said, I’m all ears, Gen.” He clicked his tongue and started pacing around his father’s tearoom. It was clear to him why the emperor would prefer his sister over him, even though he was closer in age. Isao had legitimized him the moment he had found him but that didn’t erase the fact that his blood wasn’t as pure as Kikoru’s. Lady Hikari had come from an ancient line with ties to the emperor’s own family; it was an easy choice to make when it came to deciding the bloodline the future emperor should bear. But maybe they could excuse this if the arrangement didn’t involve the emperor, instead… Gen turned on his heel and kneeled in front of his father. He clenched his hands into fits on top of his thighs so the tremors currently wracking them wouldn’t be noticeable. “Offer me to the crown prince. As an omega I’ll be able to give him heirs but my blood is not without fault and so you can’t hail me as an empress even if you tried to usurp the emperor through his younger brother. That ought to bring the emperor some peace of mind.” Hasegawa’s mouth fell open. The head of the Shinomiya clan remained impassive, not even a twitch in his face altering his expression. “Are you being serious, Gen?” “Would I joke about the one thing I’ve screamed about not wanting?” “There are several things you like to scream about, son.” He felt his usual retort on the tip of his tongue but he bit it down and bowed instead. He heard the soft fluttering of robes; probably Hasegawa balking at the uncharacteristic show of respect. “Please, father. Keep Kikoru by your side until she’s old enough you can’t keep refuting offers and send me instead. By proclaiming me as your true son since I was a kid, you have shown that you favor me in some way. The emperor will be reassured he has taken something valuable from you.” The ensuing silence was a heavy weight upon Gen’s shoulders. Marriage was one of the topics that easily elicited fights between his father and I, fights that had only grown in frequency the older he got. The truth was; he didn’t want to ever get married. He despised the idea, he had hated the mere possibility of being someone’s property when he still lived at the brothel and that sentiment had not changed just because as the son of a prominent family he would be sold not to a client but to a husband instead. But this was his little sister. He would not let Kikoru fall into that trap if he could buy her a few more years of childhood with his own freedom. “Very well. I will ask for an audience with the emperor.” Gen deflated, the rigid angle of his squared shoulders melting into a slope. He raised his head again. “Thank you, father.” “No, Gen.” Shinomiya Isao gave him a small nod and the omega felt his eyebrows jump so high they probably just got lost under his bangs. “Thank you for your devotion to this family.” Out of nowhere, his throat constricted and he felt his chin tremble. Gen clenched his jaw, refusing to burst into tears over something so small. “I need to learn about poisons, medicine in general. Ah, maybe I should be trained under a midwife as well, any child I have will be less important than the emperor’s, right? So I should hoard as much information as I can.” Hasegawa let out a deep sigh. “I thought you meant tutors regarding your manners and your knowledge of current affairs.” “Ugh, those two. But the ones I mentioned are the true life or death ones.” His father cleared his throat. “Gen is right. He will be targeted if he’s to live in the inner court. We have trained you in arts that will help you defend yourself from an overt attack but the invisible and insidious ones… those you need to learn how to protect yourself against.”

We might go on, we might not. I’m fine with that. Personally, I don’t know if there’s life after death. It makes no sense to me, and honestly, one lifetime feels like plenty. The idea that humans are so extraordinary we deserve eternal sentience strikes me as a little pretentious.

Filling the holes in the gaps in the cracks of my forgetting. Thinking the world is a cup the sun fills every day, even when it's cloudy, then goes away. The chair my father sat in to read the Bible is full of the absence of him doing that. Death is a hat we look in for the head that wore it, a picture we take in the future of the past. If you come by for breakfast, I'll pour you a bowl of thorns, so dont. I need some time alone, like the rest of my life. It's weird to me now that we urge kids to blow birthday candles out when they should burn, given that our bones are I.O.U.s. Cake sounds good, and after cake, being older and missing cake. Mr. Goss was born in London on July 30th, 1833. In his early life he was a great student, and at Somerset House where he spent much of his youthful leisure, he became an artist of some considerable power. He remained in London until he was twenty-four years of age, making at this time the acquaintance with most of the best-known literary men of the day.
