I had to say goodbye to this long-sleeve 1993 LPSC t-shirt. It tore along the colored section. I seem to recall Graham Ryder saying he'd had a hand in the design, and it was the last time that the LPI gave him any responsibility.

Sorry . . . I missed the context of your comment. No LPSC abstracts appear in M&PS.

Yeah LPSC abstracts being counted in Google Scholar is a metrics cheat code
January 27, 2026 at 11:47 PM
Well, LPSC has a history of doing strange things with LPSC abstracts (like disappearing them if they think the current regime would disapprove of them) soooooooo
January 27, 2026 at 11:28 PM
The Blewett Lunar Vertex LPSC abstracts are not published in Meteoritics and Planetary Science, for instance. Unless I’m missing something, @planet-daveb.bsky.social ?
January 27, 2026 at 11:23 PM
Yeah for me its trying to attribute LPSC abstracts to journal publications that don’t exist. Weird!
January 27, 2026 at 11:22 PM
Google Scholar is doing some very strange things with LPSC (and other) abstracts today. Perhaps related to an EBSCO database issue? Anyone else seeing this?
January 27, 2026 at 9:51 PM
I’m not ready to give up on LPSC. Though perhaps more of a long shot, I would rather see AGU, GSA, and/or The Planetary Society take over management of LSPC. I strongly suspect trying to move to a meeting like DPS would splinter the community.

I've got 3 great undergrads presenting their work at LPSC before they graduate in May, but I won't be presenting myself. I'm there to support them & promote their work. If you've got a student going to the meeting who needs a supportive audience to help their science grow, hit me up!

The number of abstracts submitted to the Lunar and Planetary Science Conference (#lpsc) this year is down by almost 50% when compared to normal years.

It's hard to say what is the main cause, but big factors are Europeans who don't want to travel to the […]

Here are the numbers until back to 2010:

And counter-point about how much this has to do with civil servants: it does look like the rules are loosening a bit regarding conference travel, and some civil servants may feel compelled to attend LPSC because they missed out on DPS and AGU last year.
January 27, 2026 at 1:28 AM
I won't name the source: I just learned the numbers for AGU's Fall Meeting, which arguably had more issues with Civil Servants being unable to attend than LPSC would. It faced a 10% drop in attendance. LPSC is facing a 47% drop. It seems likely that the drop is strongly connected to the knee-bending

I only count 1016, but close enough - almost 50% drop from prior three years:

SHOCKINGLY my abstract for LPSC 2026 was not accepted
I submitted an abstract to LPSC 2026.

I wanted to see how many abstracts were submitted this year. Mine went in at 11:58 pm Central, so is among the last to go in. It will be rejected, but for the student rate ($35) it was worth the experiment.

And this year's LPSC might be inflated actually because a lot of NASA folks weren't able to attend AGU and DPS/EPSC in the fall.
January 9, 2026 at 3:21 PM
Much (perhaps the plurality) of reduced AGU attendance was from foreign scientists choosing not to travel to the US. That's less of an issue for LPSC (though certainly part of the picture).
January 9, 2026 at 2:51 PM
This is absolutely amazing. It's sad to watch what happens to LPSC, once "the place to be". This year EPSC is happening in The Hague, the home of international courts (and accidentally, the destination can have a symbolic meaning). I hope that many American colleagues will come to Europe instead!
