Photo by Pierre Lavie. Yes this is me. And I threw my Leica. It landed on the bass plate with hardly a scratch. Another Photographer grabbed it along with my phone and I was able to track him later. I was held face down tear gas deployed right in front of me and pepper sprayed directly into the eye.

This photo was taken in 1911 using glass plate technology by Herbert Ponting who was part of Scott's Antarctic expedition,

The composition and detail are exquisite with the band of white snow/ice creating a perfect frame around the two people and the ship in the distance

Iconic imo

For @msnownews.bsky.social, I wrote an article about how ICE Watch is grounded in sociological theories of violence prevention.

The reality is that most men will only commit public violence in extremely specific scenarios and ICE Watch disrupts the conditions necessary for escalation.
Opinion | I'm a Minneapolis sociologist who studies violence. Here's how ICE observers are helping.
Research into how violence occurs shows that disapproval from the people around you can help reduce it.

This is impressive. I hope we never detonate another nuclear weapon, anywhere on Earth or beyond.
Here's my latest piece for the @ucs.org blog. Today marks the longest period without a nuclear explosion since Trinity. I explore why as well as the reasons that it would be so counterproductive for the US to shatter this moratorium.
The Nuclear Testing Moratorium Passes a Milestone
The world has now gone the longest period of time since 1945 without an explosive nuclear test. Breaking this streak would be not only unnecessary but also unwise.

General strike in MN. The people united can never be defeated!
Unions and community orgs are calling for a Minnesota-wide shutdown in 10 days to protest the ferocious assault by federal immigration agents. They're saying on Jan 23, no work, no school, no shopping. SEIU Local 26, UNITE HERE Local 17, & others are supporting, w/ more to join. By me, Amie Stager

I’m seeing lots of people on here misunderstand the purpose of ICE watch.

It’s de-escalation. And it’s grounded in the social science of violence. 🧵

Generative AI technologies are the perfect technology of capitalism because they consume resources to create a product that people must be forced to use until it deskills them enough they become dependent upon it. Tyranny as a service, and it's the biggest industry in the world right now.

I think the misogynist contempt that’s evident as a motivation in the murder of Renee Good makes her killing by a state actor more similar to so-called private violence—eg domestic violence homocides—than some arguments that rely on a firm distinction between state and private violence can sustain.

Something something petromasculinjty and driving vehicles into peaceful protests and the ubiquity/necessity of having a vehicle in the US and the refusal to regulate MPG and size and safety to pedestrians, and the now ICE weaponizing the weaponization in order to kill (women et al.) with impunity.

My spousal unit is upset because the free trickle chargers that were here when we stayed at this hotel are gone now, but I’m not mad. Last time I glanced down at the landscaping rock and picked up a Paleozoic #fossil horn coral, and this time I looked and saw these smol tabulate friends.
