I don't think they thought any legal questions existed. I think they just thought it was funny to tell a transparent and demeaning lie rather than refuse outright to sell to a Blue State. When I hear someone pretending there's a law that means they have to be a dipshit, I suspect Red state grievance

At the Millennial Retirement Home, everyone is gonna have a laptop and run Linux and we'll probably go back to IMs and email and RSS. There will be specialist old-folks companies, the sort that sell weird specialist goods on cable at 3AM, that cater to this market.

I say this as somebody who completely lost faith in liberalism, in part because of this failure mode where it becomes obvious that voting patterns are not effectively tied to observable reality--if indeed they ever have been. People assign blame without reference to facts; elections are distortions.

The weird double-standard in American politics where liberals (Democrats) are expected to shoulder the blame for everything, while simultaneously being illegitimate when in power, is probably the second biggest unspoken problem in our governance, after capitalism itself. It is a cultural tumor.

I’ve received a report from anonymous active duty personnel in Texas that the Texas National Guard will be moving out nationwide to ICE Protest sites, possibly in civilian gear, and changing their unit patches to hide origins.
