New HO loco get!

I ordered this Trix "Sachsenstolz/Saxon's Pride" via my shop (which is a Marklin dealer) on New Year's Eve and now it's finally here! It's honestly a beautiful locomotive, both standing still and in motion, and it'll keep me happy for a while.

My Trix Saxon Class 19.0 posed between my Broadway Limited "Blue Comet" and my Roco Wurttemberg C class Pacific. The Blue Comet was a present from @DellaKitt, while the C Class was a birthday present from my German friends Flo, Lukas, and Liam last year (2025). I like to think they've all dated each other. The "Sachsenstolz" or "Saxon's Pride" straight out of the box. I was inspired to get this unique-looking express mikado after the Wurttemberg C from the previous photo was unable to pull a six-car Rheingold set due to having a very weird drive system. Thus, a stronger locomotive was needed. What attracted me to the "Saxon's Pride" was the very squished valve gear, the super tall wheels, and the bullet nose smokebox. A front detail view of the Saxon's Pride, showing off the bullet-nosed smokebox door usually hidden behind the big smoke deflectors. It's honestly a really nice model, very weighty, and runs smooth as a jewel watch. The best thing about the Saxon's Pride is that it has an easily-accessible 21 pin decoder under the coal bunker. The decoder was made by Loksound for Marklin and has some minor quirks but isn't as egregious as other German decoders. The sound is also fantastic in it too, which makes me hesitate about changing it to something more accessible like a Tsunami decoder by Soundtraxx.

That Marklin M track layout brings back memories of my first HO layout. It is a very robust system which is great for temporary setups (and the ever changing track plan of a young teenager).

It's easy to focus on laying track and put rolling stock to the side as it breaks but you might have a nice surprise like this realizing a box of MTL wheels work on Marklin, (?), and Tokyo Marui. For 10 minutes on the con-car "this doesn't fit at all" but got the Marklin then all 3 worked! #ZScale🚧

It’s the same reason a lot of 80s Hornby, Lima, Trix Twin, Marklin, etc “freewheels”, because they don’t use worm gears, all straight cut, does make them all noisier runners than something with helical gears but they’re great for power transfer and easy to make, likely why they were used

My first wargames table was my train layout when I was eleven or twelve; airfix soldiers and matchbox tanks fought over my Märklin trains.

It's a bit of a mixed bag though, wargames and model railroad scales rarely match (except for British 00 gauge). I have thought about it though...
