This movie now looks as wild and experimental as a hand-painted Melies short. It doesn’t make it GOOD but maybe even more interesting than it was in 1982

It’s sad that horror for the most part is considered “lower art”. Even in his day Méliès film weren’t considered anything but childish entertainment.

Smashing Pumpkins "Tonight, Tonight" (1996)-A gorgeous homage to the silent film "A Trip to the Moon" by Georges Méliès. In the mid-90s, Méliès was obscure and mostly unheard-of outside of film classes. Also, the video is notable for starring a pre-Spongebob Tom Kenny

Georges Méliès, true to his stage roots, demonstrates no strings in THE MERMAID (1904). While his special effects are justly acclaimed, I think he also deserves credit for being among the first performers to understand how to play to the camera.

In Seattle I programmed my own little film studies degree by deep diving into things I found fascinating at my "campus library," @scarecrowvideo.bsky.social.

I'm satisfied with how far I got, but it was fun to find this old list plotting my next adventures.

the moment in I Saw the TV Glow where it goes from a drama about closeted transpeople to stomach-dropping horror is the reveal of mr. melancholy. he's shown in most of the pink opaque footage to be a goofy Melies moon, and then his real form ends up living up to the film's creepypasta inspirations

can't even read something like Georges Méliès' wiki without being reminded of these sickening little freaks piggybacking their anti-ideas off of long dead artists

people who were actual pioneers in creativity didn't need to use a dream substitute machine to manifest it

literally mulch yourselves

Méliès is remembered for his camera trickery, outlandish effects, and using every inch of screen. This film is stark in comparison, relying on the rather linear movement of the spider and on the exaggerated lashing about of the sleeper

Je trouve pas la partition de Amoureux Solitaires mais la version d’Arman Melies. Ça m’énerve.

I prefer the special effects of Georges Méliès!

I refer you to the work of:
Georges Melies (pioneer French cinematographer)
Jules Verne
H.G. Wells
And (almost) Metropolis [1927], which is STILL influencing modern cinema

The moon from Georges Méliès' Le Voyage dans la Lune and The Lady in the Radiator from David Lynch's Eraserhead are receiving congratulations from their friends on the arrival of their son, Darren.
