Pōhutukawa flowers (Metrosideros excelsa) by motorway overbridge. There have been a few early-flowering ones but it looks like the season proper is starting to get underway. #pohutukawa #pohutukawageddon #flower #SomethingBeautiful

Metrosideros carminea.
Climbing rata is flowering and happily taking over the shed, which is fine by me.
Couple years back it was badly affected by myrtle rust but healthy now.

My Metrosideros Springfire has been flowering continuously since early June. Usually starts early September so it was an early start this year.

It's been identified as Metrosideros parkinsoni, Parkinson's rata, which is rare in cultivation so it's not surprising I didn't know it.

There were lots of Kermadec pohutakawa planted around Wellington city, as they are thought to be a little smaller (I have my doubts). They are often the trees flowering out of the main season. They hybridize readily with other Metrosideros species.

Side by side comparison of the flowers of two Metrosideros species native to New Zealand.
Left: Rātā moehau (Metrosideros bartlettii or Bartlett's rātā) has white flowers.
Right: Pōhutukawa (Metrosideros excelsa) has red flowers. #SomethingBeautiful #pohutukawa #rata #flower

Quite possible & it's in a construction site which isn't "normal". But I have seen other examples of Metrosideros around Auckland CBD that normally flower in November already showing "spring growth" in April, so I don't think what we are seeing is normal.

For #ArtAdventCalendar Day 16, the Tiniest Maui Honeycreeper, a Maui ʻalauahio (Paroreomyza montana) on ʻōhiʻa lehua (Metrosideros polymorpha). These little ones are hard to photograph, as they're true creepers, mostly stay in close to the tree trunks--I got lucky here. :) 📷🌿🦉
