I've been smiling on the inside since reading this beautifully written story of intricate discoveries about mycoheterotrophic plants 2 days ago

The wonder and new knowledge that results from "nerds freely nerding in their nerd field" (💚 this!) is such a gift

AI never could

This beautifully written story of discoveries about mycoheterotrophic plants in @science.org is such a lovely contrast (& antidote) to the dreadful AI-boosting PR of the @nature.com story about "a scientific conference in which all of the papers — and all of the reviews" were produced by AI bots

Kinda want to do something with Chimaphila since it's one of the only forest herbs we got at work, plus it's partially mycoheterotrophic, and evergreen so we could fit it into a Spring semester course, what do you guys think? 🤔

Marion's research on parasitic and mycoheterotrophic plants is awesome! Do check it out if you can!
Giving a talk in Philly next month! Gonna be discussing parasitic plants in post-agricultural forests for Philadelphia Botanical Club on May 22nd (ask a sedge freak or tune in on zoom). There's something here for tree parasite and mycoheterotroph fans alike! #ParasiticPlant

We sequenced a transcriptome for the rare mycoheterotrophic underground orchid Rhizanthella, which has eluded phylogenetic placement due to its degraded plastome. For the 1st time we recovered Rhizanthella as sister to Prasophyllum, supported by their exclusive partnerships with Ceratobasidiaceae

After searching for years with no luck, I finally found a snow plant. It was not quite fully unfurled but still beautiful. Only 2 to go and I will have photographed every mycoheterotrophic plant in the USA.

Plants that survive without sunlight? Dr. Suetsugu studies mycoheterotrophic plants that "cheat" by stealing nutrients from fungi instead of photosynthesizing. His field research reveals nature's hidden partnerships.
Kenji Suetsugu: Combining Childhood Curiosity with Scientific Rigour
Botany One interviews Dr Kenji Suetsugu, a Japanese plant ecologist fascinated with plants that completely abandoned photosynthesis.

Biology, yes, botany no! What person trapped in the 18th c. is trying to claim otherwise now? I suppose there’s a decent intersection of the fields when it comes to stuff like mycorrhizal relationships and mycoheterotrophic plants, but “fungi ≠ plants” was settled aaaaaages ago.

Pinedrops--Mycoheterotrophic--parasite on fungus that is symbiotic with pine family--probably. No chlorophyll/photosynthesis. Proto-carnivorous--sticky hairs trap small insects and absorb carbon. Anyway, a complicated and wonderous natural history.
