#30DayMapChallenge - Day 17 - A New Tool

So the new tool / process I tried this time was using the Raster Calculator in QGIS to run NDVI on this orthoimagery dataset that I downloaded for Adams County, Ohio. Why Adams County? That's the "Roulette Part"

Magnífico. Gracias.
Me ha costado dos lecturas…
Seguía hace años al grupo GeoForest y sus mapas de predicción de incendios con masa combustible (NDVI) y otros modelos, pero nunca había leído una explicación clara.

This study integrated spatial and fractal analyses to comprehensively evaluate the distribution of urban green areas in Samsun, Turkey. Green spaces were identified using NDVI from satellite imagery, with manual thresholding proving more accurate in heterogeneous urban contexts.

New basemap options include:
🛩️ NAIP imagery (true color, color infrared, NDVI),
🗺️ Historical imagery from the USGS archive
🌐 1-m topography layers from USGS 3DEP.

These layers bring landscapes into focus and make it easier to interpret satellite data

Do you do NDVI? Yes, sure! But we do a lot more than that too! Try us out for a whole range of indices that help you get a better understanding of the site you are monitoring.

Classic NDVI can be fuzzy over bright soils and sparse canopies. We re-parameterized EVI with PSO for semi-arid mountains on Sentinel-2.
Have you tried scene-specific EVI tuning?

We assessed the effect of spatial variables and distance to coast on treeline structure (change in treeline elevation) and function (change in treeline NDVI), revealing that treelines are moving up and becoming more dense, with the most rapid change in low latitudes.

It will be helpful. For instance, it may be interesting to bridge self-reported EMA data with urban data (e.g., walkability, NDVI) or rain....

First, the depolarisation of the land surface measured by EarthCARE's lidar seems to be very well correlated to the widely used "NDVI" vegetation index - but why? We don't yet know but potentially this could be telling us something new about vegetation!

How precise is precise enough? Tree crown segmentation using high resolution close-up multispectral UAV images and its effect on NDVI accuracy in Fraxinus excelsior L. trees | Journal of Forestry Research link.springer.com/article/10.1...

How precise is precise enough? Tree crown segmentation using high resolution close-up multispectral UAV images and its effect on NDVI accuracy in Fraxinus excelsior L. trees - Journal of Forestry Research
Detailed individual tree crown segmentation is highly relevant for the detection and monitoring of Fraxinus excelsior L. trees affected by ash dieback, a major threat to common ash populations across Europe. In this study, both fine and coarse crown segmentation methods were applied to close-range multispectral UAV imagery. The fine tree crown segmentation method utilized a novel unsupervised machine learning approach based on a blended NIR–NDVI image, whereas the coarse segmentation relied on the segment anything model (SAM). Both methods successfully delineated tree crown outlines, however, only the fine segmentation accurately captured internal canopy gaps. Despite these structural differences, mean NDVI values calculated per tree crown revealed no significant differences between the two approaches, indicating that coarse segmentation is sufficient for mean vegetation index assessments. Nevertheless, the fine segmentation revealed increased heterogeneity in NDVI values in more severely damaged trees, underscoring its value for detailed structural and health analyses. Furthermore, the fine segmentation workflow proved transferable to both individual UAV images and orthophotos from broader UAV surveys. For applications focused on structural integrity and spatial variation in canopy health, the fine segmentation approach is recommended.

A health impact assessment of changes in NDVI on all-cause mortality across 1041 global cities
A health impact assessment of changes in NDVI on all-cause mortality across 1041 global cities
Urban greenspaces are associated with improved health and climate resiliency. Large scale health impact assessments of urban greenspace and mortality have been limited to American and European cities. We estimated changes in mortality associated with observed differences in population-weighted greenest season normalized difference vegetation index (NDVI) between 2014–2018 and 2019–2023 across 1041 global cities representing 174 countries. We used publicly available high-resolution satellite-derived estimates of NDVI and population, baseline disease rates from the Global Burden of Disease study, and a hazard ratio of the association between NDVI and all-cause mortality from an epidemiological meta-analysis. We found that urban greenspace varies substantially across cities (NDVI mean: 0.270, range: 0.072, 0.580) and by climate classification and geographic region. Despite modest global average changes in NDVI from 2014–2018 to 2019–2023, NDVI has changed by over ±20% in individual cities. Median regional changes were largest in South-eastern Asia (−0.022), Sub-Saharan Africa (−0.010) and Eastern Asia (+0.014) and most stable in arid climates (
