#Kent is very lovely in places. Here's the hills and fields near #Chilham and #Chartham. Now back in the Kings Head where I started off and sitting by their amazing fireplace. Must head back here in winter to see what it's like at full blast.

This is "Oast Houses, Kent" by John Cooper from 1934. Some years ago, thanks to a contact here, the location of this one was identified as being Forge Farm between Eridge & Groombridge in Kent, highlighted in yellow on the map, courtesy of The National Library Of Scotland #JohnCooper #OastHouses

The cuckoo is in good voice this morning. His call lends an added dimension to our valley of wooded shaws and sloping orchards, with the stream wending through alders at the bottom; a stretching-back into history among the oasthouses.

I hope he stays.

Many oasthouses survive in Kent, most of which have been converted into homes. There’s a thriving trade in carpenters locally who specialise in building and fitting furniture into the roundels.

A malthouse is a long low building - most now converted to homes or other uses.

Where I grew up in Kent (nr London) lots of hops were grown - as you prob know they stabilise & flavour beer. Hops were dried in v distinctive oasthouses like these:

Batemans is a lovely, warm, oak-panelled Sussex manor, purchased by Rudyard Kipling in 1902 for £9k. He arrived in a very early motorcar, and the seller later confided that if he’d realised motorcars would ‘catch on’, he’d have charged Kipling twice the price for the isolated Manor House.

Question, did/does anywhere have that many #oasthouses in one place other than Beltring?

There's an alternate timeline where he decides not to fuss too much with his parents' Irish heritage and instead forms a band called the Oasthouses who just do songs about Kentish things like hop growing and racism. Identity is a funny thing
