interesting! I've always used openemu (it has a nice old school iTunes-like interface) or retroarch on Mac but I'm a fan of higan/bsnes so if Ares is associated with it I'll have to check it out, thanks!

all I want is OpenEmu to be freed from Mac

I tried RetroArch on Steam as well as standalone. Hated it. I love OpenEmu, but it's Mac only (and I do have a decent one at that)

Taking my first little vacation with only a MacBook. I've made sure OOTP is up to date, and moved my Voluntarios save over. Also, installed OpenEmu, connected my 8BitDo 64 controller and copied over my N64 wrestling ROMs.

OpenEmu not supporting runahead and IINA not supporting Dolby Vision makes me feel like Mac software is pretty much over. at least Sky.app is somewhat better for bsky than Beeskie on Windows?

I'll have to check it out. I still have my GBA Adapter for my GameCube. But really, I'm an OpenEmu user, so...

tampoco los quiero ver habla de que el XrossMediaBar de PS3 era feo cuando aceptamos que RetroArch se vea igual.
Ojalá crezcan, se saquen el miedo de jugar en mac y puedan probar OpenEmu.

Oh I just found out that retrobat has a major feature that openemu doesnt have: retroachievements. It gamifies old games with easier and more satisfying things to do than just "beat the game". I havent used it in a while but heres my profile page retroachievements.org/user/JudgeGr...

What is OpenEmu?

@judgegroovyman.bsky.social Do you know if there's anything like OpenEmu for Windows, something that doesn't require you to go out and source all the cores yourself?
August 9, 2025 at 3:54 PM
(I use OpenEmu as my emulator, and Vimm’s Lair and Internet Archive to get the actual ROMs, and haven’t had any problems. But I use Mac and stick to old, simple stuff: Atari 2600 and 5200, NES, SNES, Turbografx-16, Genesis, Game Boy, Game Boy Colour, Game Boy Advance, and Nintendo DS)

All-in-one emulators are perhaps the only example of Mac beating Windows when it comes to gaming, because OpenEmu is so much better than Retroarch.

Exceptions being a few emulators on iOS, and OpenEmu.

To be clear though, the gripe here is that they advertise NetPlay as a supported feature, yet on the Nintendo side, some of the cores most likely to be used with NP are unsupported under RA specifically for NetPlay, despite emulator support.

(Saying this all in good faith here. I'm not touching OpenEmu as a deeper topic for your sake.)
July 24, 2025 at 2:07 PM
In general, RA feels scuffed any time I have had a need to touch it. And projects LIKE OpenEmu prove something like RA but with a minimum level of polish IS possible.

Like, all my gripes personally are founded in active detriments that have prevented me from using it as intended.
July 24, 2025 at 2:07 PM
the RA devs are shit and most of the rest of the criticism about RA comes from halo-effect bad-faith reinterpretations of fact. (for instance, there are like three UI cores built into it.) it is mostly fine.
OpenEmu should come to platforms that people actually play games on.
July 24, 2025 at 1:45 PM
I've heard the RA devs are shit, their UI is Dollar Tree PlayStation XMB, and their cores lack some of the basic features of the full fat emulators they stem from.

It's a joke piece of software. You're better off just downloading the full emulators.

Or if you're on Mac, OpenEmu is an option.

Further experimentation: I decided to see if Jaguar Doom runs properly in RetroArch, as OpenEmu always had issues with it. The answer: no, it does not. As with OpenEmu, the game itself takes up only half the window so everything's squashed (though the status bar displays normally).
Started messing around with RetroArch again because I wanted to see if it works any better on this Mac than it did on my old one, so far the answer is yes but it's definitely got some quirks that are hard to get used to.
