#placeholder-games
One of the games I really liked this years Alters had a identical placeholder AI asset made it in controversy and I similarly supported calling out that bullshit.

Here's the thing you know what maybe let's spread the love to other games that didn't use the forest eating plagiarism job stealer.

BECKETT: *chuckles as she watches Scott and his dad sit at the table in the sweaters she knitted them as they read the paper* You guys look like a Leave it to Beaver episode. *giggles as moves past them to get the brown sugar and fig scones she made out from the oven*

Although not referenced in the final name; Naughty Dog's Way Of The Warrior was used as a placeholder in the original Crash Bandicoot; as the games 'Yin Yang Yuck' logo was shown as a collectable within the April 8th, 1996 development version of Crash Bandicoot.

I've not commented on it, but:

Why the fuck is generative AI being used for placeholder assets in games at all?

It's a fucking placeholder, it should be in obnoxiously bright neon pink plastered with "REPLACE ME" in rainbow comic sans so it's incredibly obvious it shouldn't be there on release.

People really be acting like Exp33 is a AAA made by evil corpos when it was made by a much smaller dev team, it's honestly a miracle that it is the way it is, even with the genAI placeholder example

I get we don't want genAI in our games again, but I feel we're fighting the wrong people sometimes

I think it's less a filling gaps thing and more of a directions from above to try it out thing, like a mix of that and the 'its just a placeholder' thing

Like I think they thought they could get away with it until people turned on those other games

RAMBLER: I got dinner at Mart's later but I won't keep you. It was a pretty easy question. *shows him*
LOGAN: I think fixin

But to the point you were attempting to make, the difference is that placeholder assets get left in games all the time. The difference is that Sandfall caught the mistake 5 days after launch and patched their honest mistake before they were called out.

lil placeholder pinned post ~! ‧˚꒰🍷꒱༘‧—

let me introduce myself. I'm Rora!
A vampire who ran away and joined the circus 🦇🎪

I'm a Vtuber who loves to play an assortment of cozy games (though i have a weakness for roguelikes). I'm part of the VFright group and I also do art!

You know how I've been working on amateur sloppy retro games?

Uhhhh....

Not to sound like i'm Defending AI here or anything but I've seen this argument a bunch of times, and i really do think it's a bit conspiratorial. like, placeholder shit and old textures get left in games all the time, then patched out when players notice and post about the textures online.

JERICHO: *parks and smirks as he gets out*

APACHE: Well it definitely wasn't WASN'T me and Mav. And Rambler didn't

It won't be in our games, we were just using it in early stages...

"for concept art" (WHY)

"for placeholder assets"

"in our toolset"

"for minor things like backgrounds"

"for major things, but guided"

"for purchasable skins"

I really loved many of these games, and for me Death Stranding 2 was absolute GOTY

Expedition 33 a very close second.

Can't bring myself to play Arc Raiders though due to AI use (even though some GenAI placeholder art made it into Ex:33)
It's wildly successful. Pay voice actors, and I'll play it

i think it is bad that data centers have made the texas power grid worse, because if another big storm happens a whole bunch more people will die than last time

if you think that's exactly the same as being vacantly mad about placeholder assets in video games, maybe you should log off for a while

Game devs have been using placeholder images in games for decades. We don't need GenAI for that.
December 24, 2025 at 9:12 AM
this whole push in the industry to use gen-AI for 'exploring ideas' and placeholder assets easily discouraged me from playing games of many devs i'm fond of, let alone pay for this shit. and i'm sure i'm not the only one. the dent in profits they're causing themselves is gonna hurt, deservedly so
December 24, 2025 at 4:25 AM
Okay, this one seems like a touchy one (but it's not), because many games have used a form of text to speech for audio cues in pre-release - you probably haven't heard it much because it sounds like a robot and it is obvious that it's not NOT FINAL. That's what you want in a placeholder asset!
December 23, 2025 at 10:23 PM
it also does not help that games and 3D modeling software has used procedurally generated elements since its inception (mainly generating things like terrain, level geometry, weather elements and sometimes even textures, though since the 90s they're always a placeholder for man-made assets).
tl;dr: GenAI and game design concepts traditionally referred to as "AI" (enemy behaviors, pathfinding, etc.) are not the same thing, and I'm on my knees begging people to learn the difference, lest we see more bullshit claims like what The Escapist put out re: Blue Prince.
Weird weekend, huh? Took a crack at breaking down the whole Clair Obscur genAI situation, and its bizarre fallout, as best as possible. My main takeaway right now is that people really need to figure out exactly what they're criticizing or it's going to get messy. www.polygon.com/clair-obscur...

"But AI is being used a placeholder", just shut the fuck up please. We go through this every time. You can't hold a political position until you get the weakest push-back from an IP you like/have nostalgia for. There's 0 need for genAI in your games.

Kind of trying to summarize some thoughts about the whole weird Clair Obscur placeholder AI, Indie Game Awards shit, takes a lot of words because microblogging is not a great place for things and a lot of stuff is very in-the-now.
