For thousands of years there was no alternative to the agony of such an operation. Alcohol and opium were about the best you could take to dull the sensations while your body was sliced open. But in the late eighteenth century, British chemist Humphry Davy made an astonishing breakthrough during a series of experiments conducted on himself. Davy would heat ammonium nitrate crystals, collect the resulting nitrous oxide gas, and then inhale it. The experience was rather pleasant, and so he investigated more often and with stronger doses. Davy had encountered the effects of laughing gas, and he invited family and friends, including the famed poet Samuel Taylor Coleridge, to partake. In a monograph from 1800 titled Researches, Chemical and Philosophi-cal, the twenty-one-year-old Davy presented the methods and results from his experiments into the production and inhalation of nitrous oxide. He reflected on the intense psychedelic effects of high doses, which amused and thrilled him and his companions. Buried amid 580 pages of dense technical details and philosophical musings was an offhand remark: "As nitrous ox-ide... appears capable of destroying physical pain, it may probably be used with advantage during surgical operations."2 hotin • Oi

Rules: Five, four line stanzas and every stanza must have every letter of the alphabet in it at least once. That's it. No other restrictions on meter, rhyme or syllable count. Here's the poem: Text buzz; my phone clips a laugh on the quad. Vivid draft for friends, raw, not perfect. Old rules: just walk home, be decent, be safe. New world: we text, we riff, we breathe. Jukebox waltz, milkshake fizz, sticky booth glow. We wax paper maps, bike past creek bends. No doomscroll, no posts; just dusk and talk. Dare, brave kiss, then home, quiet. Xeroxed zine, black ink, cheap glue. Quiz bell; we joke, we trade weird memes. Fuzzy hoodie, calm grin, loud hallway. I type a brave line, then hit send. Mom tells of pay phones, quarters, long walks. Dad says mixtapes, wax, a curbside kiss. My feed buzz-scrolls fast; I vex it, close it. Between both, youth keeps its wild jokes. Night air, porchlight, keys, soft laughter. We jump the fence, kick gravel, breathe. Quick question: arcade, pizza, riverwalk, text jokes? Zippy joy, flawed and real, won’t quit.
