#prehistoricplaneticeage
Capping off the year with yet another prehistoric map:

Australia during the Pleistocene ice age, an ancient land of bizarre Megafauna, as seen in the most recent season of Prehistoric Planet.

See you all in 2026, happy new year! : )

Back to my thoughts on #PrehistoricPlanetIceAge

Something I really appreciated was the "Under the Ice" section at the end of each episode. I liked the diversity of scientific disciplines involved and how it focused on key concepts such as the glacial/interglacial cycles or the GABI.

Jon Favreau sent me a Christmas present.. again. Truly he's a fantastic person and it's been great to work with him :) Oh, and watch #PrehistoricPlanetIceAge on Apple TV.

kinda wishing #prehistoricplaneticeage touched on columbian-woolly mammoth hybridisation, perhaps this could feature in a second season?

shameless plug but it has been a week since my #prehistoricplaneticeage review was published and i'd wager that most of you are not super busy today given that it's boxing day, so why not check it out 👀

Merry Christmas, here's a non-Lord of the Rings usage of "fell beast" by a Victorian paleontologist via @tetzoo.bsky.social Wondering if this was a stock phrase around Tolkien's era.

If you ever got pranked by an Australian about "dropbears" they're real, just very extinct

Tired of the blacks, greys, whites, browns and yellows of mammals? The dinosaurs of the Pleistocene can provide a dash of brilliant colour...

Before discovering that fact while I was doing a art for the eremotherium, I thought that the Squirrel featured in #PrehistoricPlanetIceAge was a very extinct species of squirrel, but turns out that is an extant species which surprised me.
This is the Variegated squirrel (Sciurus variegatoides), an extant and highly variable species that occurs from southern Mexico to Panama in forest and woodlands of many sorts. 15 subspecies have been named. It features in #PrehistoricPlanetIceAge as >both< a CG asset and a real filmed animal :)

I really love the sense of landscapes of the #PrehistoricPlanetIceAge and how this megafauna is placed there. During glacial maxima, continental interiors (except southern North America) were much drier, colder and harsher - almost Mars but with oxygen.

The #PrehistoricPlanetIceAge depiction of Thylacoleo carnifex is honestly peak. As someone who had this animal roam his own backyard, I honestly feel proud of how great this one turned out

Literally the only 2 iffy aspects are its speed and how it was affected by its habitat, that's how good it is
