Now, the trick is convincing somebody to test it. That test will have to come from some technique other than seismology as the seismic velocity properties for a cooled off garnet pyroxenite and a normal mantle peridotite overlap too much to distinguish.

If you ever visit the area, I'd be happy to point out some of my favorite spots. Pillow basalt abruptly transitioning to metased. Cumulate pyroxenite. Metalliferous precipitates. Sheeted dikes. Gotta jump around a bit, but all the "pieces" from upper mantle ultramafics to sea floor sediment.

Pyroxenite xenoliths of #mantle origin were erupted from only 3 Hawaiʻi rejuvenation vents, composite #peridotite - #pyroxenite xenoliths are rarer and may reflect opx dissolution. Revisiting this Oʻahu sample from January, no visible garnet in handsample but cool nonetheless.

#Makapuʻu lends its name to the Makapuʻu-Stage lavas of the #Koʻolau Basalt. They have the highest 87Sr/86Sr of #Hawaiʻi #lavas, low 143Nd/144Nd, 176Hf/177Hf, and 206Pb/204Pb, and high La/Nb and Sr/Nb indicating a recycled component (likely secondary #pyroxenite via #eclogite) of the Pacific LLSVP.

Once the serpentinite and crust gets down into the mantle, it dehydrates and converts to eclogite, a garnet pyroxenite. Thats the key - eclogite is denser than the whole mantle and so it sinks, dragging along the whole plate by its density.

I went rock hunting on Fuerteventura without having my hand-lens with me. Found this lovely bling piece of blackness and hope it's a perovskite-bearing amphibole pyroxenite. It certainly has shiny minerals that look at times like borg cubes. But even if not, I had fun searching. #TeamPerovskite.
