On the actual 50th anniversary of Saturday Night Live (today), here’s an article I wrote about it last year, with remembrances from Chevy Chase, Garrett Morris, Jane Curtin, Laraine Newman and many more. www.nytimes.com/2024/09/27/a...

I wonder how many ICE dudes read Anne Frank’s diary in high school and thought, “I’d have gotten her sooner.”

Introducing the Nobel Rest In Peace Prize, awarded to the person whose demise in the past year has done the most to quell violence, hatred, and turmoil. Obviously, their death would need to be natural (no assassinations, executions, etc.) Don't want the prize to encourage violence. 3/3

I told her the Nobels are awarded to the living only. She said, "I know that, and you know that, but Trump doesn't know that." I have little doubt she called that right, but it *did* give me an idea. The Committee should institute a NEW prize that's ONLY awarded posthumously. 2/3

Mentioned to a friend that Trump didn't win the Nobel Peace Prize, undoubtedly due to voter fraud, malfunctioning voting and tabulation machines, illegal aliens, vote-by mail, and so on. She said someone should console him and tell him he's still eligible for it posthumously. 1/3

ME: Now Mom, just remember, there's a lot of disinformation and AI in your social feed and your friends' Facebook.
MOM: I know! My friend sent me this crazy post where someone used AI to make an image of a giant frog fighting Army troops!
ME: ... okay, no, that one's ... goddamit, Portland.

That is when I saw him; the young frog facing down the masked thugs. He stood alone against this terrible foe, Azog the ICE agent. Our forces rallied and drove ICE back; our enemy had been defeated... I thought to myself then 'There is one I could follow. There is one I could call King'.

I grew up on the periphery of Wayne Nat. Forest, and I once saw a hellbender salamander from the Richland Ave Bridge over the Hocking River. One of a few things I miss about Ohio are the mixed deciduous forests.

Wayne national forest was designated as federally-protected land in the 1930s. Now, Trump's push to open up federal lands for logging threatens Wayne national forest, home to key waterways and the endangered eastern hellbender salamander. #KeepForestsStanding

Over 80% of Wayne national forest classified as suitable for logging, drawing concern from locals

It's true. It's like bark beetles. Stores throughout Oregon are turning yellow, shriveling up, and dying. Next summer is going to be a nasty wildfire season. Guess that's what we get for not sweeping.

What’s the word where you’re from that, when pronounced exactly as it looks, identifies a tourist immediately?

Yes, it's a long, long way from anywhere, but it is most definitely worth it. The amount of stuff packed into the museum at the Sheep Rock unit is astonishing. The most visited unit is the Painted Hills, near Mitchell.

Happy establishment day for John Day Fossil Beds National Monument! On this day in 1975, JODA was taken over by the National Park Service. Its mission, to preserve the region's geological and paleontological resources and to provide for the scientific and public understanding of these resources.
