Photo: in a nearly monochrome landscape, a steel deck arch bridge crosses a narrow gorge under a sheltering, muted blue sky filled with fluffy white clouds. Notes: laid a desaturated version of the original color photo over the original version, then reduced the desaturated layer's opacity to 75%. What made this work (if it works) is the clear dividing line between the original's very vibrant sky (now muted) and the desaturated version's fairly shallow departure from the desert tones of the original. The Rio Grande Rift began sometime between 35 and 29 million years ago. Today the gorge that the rift has formed is over 600 feet deep. The rift is still rifting.
