The Elegant Pit Viper (Protobothrops elegans), endemic to Japan’s southern Ryukyus, is a venomous ambush predator related to Western Rattlesnakes (Crotalus oreganus). Like all pit vipers, its heat-sensing pits help it “see” radiant heat to hunt in darkness.

...leading to persistent food shortages, the primary driver of refugees fleeing the country. Usually these malnourished civilians escape by boat to Amami Island in the Ryukyus or Kunashir island in Russia. These boat people are the only source of on-the ground intel inside Japan. (10/)

We were taken to Hedo Cape, the farthest north of Okinawa island. It was brutally hot, but we could see Yoron, the southernmost island of Kagoshima prefecture. Not sure if it's visible here.

The University of the Ryūkyūs will be displaying two high resolution reproductions of two art scrolls that were stolen on December 6, 2024. The art pieces depict King Sho Kei and King Sho Iku, along with royal seals and books about these two kings.

War in China resumes by 1949 with the US and USSR aiding both sides. A ceasefire is reached by 1952 with Korea, North China, and Mongolia in the Soviet Sphere, South China in the American Sphere, and the Republic of the Ryukyus placed under long-term American occupation. (5/)

The Indo Hermit Crab (Coenobita brevimanus) broods its larvae in the female’s shell before releasing them in seawater—the only time adults return to the ocean. The violet body and reddish-brown shell make this an adult.
