There, framed by the glimmering of gently dancing candlelight stands a slender figure all in white. Like an ecstatic vision. Luminescent. The ice-white hair falls about the back like a cast-off veil. The face is obscured, but he sees the glint of dark eyes, and the lips, blood-red. A pale hand rests elegant on the bannister. The nails come to fine points.  “Well?” Comes a voice soft as silk. The figure turns, and Tamás feels the full power of those eyes cutting into him. Shadow melts from the face as it turns. A sharp, aquiline nose cuts a harsh angle, gives the impression of a snarl. The eyes are like two black jewels. The eyelashes, frost-white, snowflakes caught midair. A sheer fall of hair drapes over the shoulders and comes down to the waist. An ivory housecoat gathers on the steps. The feet are bare.  Tamás’ throat is tight. He has never seen a creature so beautiful. The delicate elegance of a prized horse. The ravenous luxury of a wolf’s silver fur. The purity of a full-bloom rose — and the promise of thorns. The figure has him enraptured. A faint smile tugs at the corner of those full, crimson lips.  A flash of white between the vast trees like a flurry of snow catches his eye. Twigs snap beneath his feet as he skirts around the tree trunk. He peers out from behind it, eyes darting from tree to tree as he prays the beast will not appear. A low growl rumbles through the silent wood. His bowel turns to ice. From the gnarled roots of a great tree it emerges. His eyes widen. He sees the pointed ears, the long snout, the silver circles reflected in its black eyes. The river of visceral red inked into its pale fur, dripping from the cruel snarl of its scimitar teeth. The enormity of its muscular body. The meaning of the word ‘wolf’ falls away in his mind, for it is larger than any wolf he has set eyes upon, and white as bone.

It hangs over the valley, his sonorous howl, like the swollen moon. He slinks back to the woods, sated. A shrill scream erupts from the village outskirts as a mother wakes to an empty, crimson cot. The men rouse from their beds. There is a murmur amongst them as they gather before the church with torches, axes, guns and knives. Grief. Rage. Fear. In the wake of the forest men are driven to desperation. They have tolerated the harrying of their livestock, the loss of their foals. Now the fiend slips silently into their homes to prey on their children. The father is with them. Though they swear otherwise, he knows he will not find his infant alive. A low growl rumbles through the silent wood. His bowel turns to ice. From the gnarled roots of a great tree it emerges. His eyes widen.
