There is this concept, that reefs and siliciclastic sediments cannot coexist. But we know of a few cases where they do, like in New Caledonia. Mapping those systems in detail reveals a complex mosaic. 🧪🌊

Profiles (E) show an asymmetric channel shape with a steep concave edge and a gently sloping convex edge (profile locations are indicated on bathymetric maps A and C). On the backscatter imagery, the abandoned meanders have a high reflectivity likely to be due to subsequent coral growth, making them difficult to distinguish from the coral coral plateau.

Take a moment to appreciate this photo of neuroanatomist Frederick C. Kenyon standing next to a "Devil's Corkscrew" at the Agate Fossil Beds in Nebraska in 1893.

These strange structures puzzled scientists for decades. Some were found 3 meters (~10 ft) deep, fossilized traces of SOMETHING.
"Daemonelix burrows, Miocene of Nebraska, USA (original vintage photo owned by the University of Nebraska; photo provided here, for geoscience education purposes, courtesy of Agate Fossil Beds National Monument). Daemonelix burrows are commonly called “Devil’s corkscrews”. These distinctive, large, spiral burrows were made by an ancient species of terrestrial beaver. The spiraled portion of these trace fossils is usually about 1.5 to 2 meters tall. The base of the spiraled portion merges with a subhorizontal tube. The burrows are filled with siliciclastic sediments that are better cemented compared with surrounding materials. Stratigraphy: paleosol in the Harrison Formation, upper Middle Miocene Locality: Agate Fossil Beds National Monument, northwestern Nebraska, USA Trace fossils are any indirect evidence of ancient life. They refer to features in rocks that do not represent parts of the body of a once-living organism. Traces include footprints, tracks, trails, burrows, borings, and bitemarks. Body fossils provide information about the morphology of ancient organisms, while trace fossils provide information about the behavior of ancient life forms. Interpreting trace fossils and determination of the identity of a trace maker can be straightforward (for example, a dinosaur footprint represents walking behavior) or not. Sediments that have trace fossils are said to be bioturbated. Burrowed textures in sedimentary rocks are referred to as bioturbation. Trace fossils have scientific names assigned to them, in the same style & manner as living organisms or body fossils."

I spent a lot of time measuring section at the original Harding Quarry and a section Walcott called Helena Canyon (named for his first wife, who accompanied him). The Harding is a siliciclastic sequence, with a basal conglomerate overlaid by heavily bioturbated sands and shale, with phosphatic lags.

Fish-bearing beds of the Harding sandstone are exposed to the left, with cliffs of the overlying Fremont limestone visible in the background. The stage road has not seen visible improvement from Walcott's original glass plate photographs. To be fair, the author looks a bit older now too.

Anyways, the Mississippian (lower Carboniferous) exposures of the Blackhand sandstone in southern Ohio's Hocking Hills are well worth the visit. This is Rock House, among the most scenic exposures.
