There is this concept, that reefs and siliciclastic sediments cannot coexist. But we know of a few cases where they do, like in New Caledonia. Mapping those systems in detail reveals a complex mosaic. 🧪🌊

TLDR? In the Palaeozoic echinoid fossil record, fine grained and siliciclastic rocks are associated with higher quality preservation than coarse grained or carbonate rocks!

These strange structures puzzled scientists for decades. Some were found 3 meters (~10 ft) deep, fossilized traces of SOMETHING.

I spent a lot of time measuring section at the original Harding Quarry and a section Walcott called Helena Canyon (named for his first wife, who accompanied him). The Harding is a siliciclastic sequence, with a basal conglomerate overlaid by heavily bioturbated sands and shale, with phosphatic lags.
