Its a young/mature dog's work--their bodies become older, its harder for them to easily climb into public transit, they become tired faster, they sometimes do become sick themselves. Most service dogs work intense jobs, too. We're lucky to have them either way.

Having grown up “rural”, the term can cover such a range of contexts.

From an unpaved road in the woods where transit or walking will probably never be relevant.

To small towns that can be totally walkable and bike-friendly. Maybe even some transit service, although that’s admittedly harder.

It's funny because most Americans that are actually rural want better public transit

you're wondering "yehoak, you're so cool. you're so majestic. why are you, so fancy and carefree, online on new years eve posting a thread about public transit???"

and the answer might shock you: i'm really tired also my knee hurts from doing cool stuff (bicycle tricks)

we need to not just talk about expanding transit in cities or building rail networks. public transit should exist every and anywhere. it supports and builds and retains community from nyc to iowa plus its extremely cool.

if you can't afford a car or can't physically drive that is infringing on a right to travel and those are already existing realities. reducing car dependency does not infringe on that as long as there are travel options. bike lanes, public transit, high speed rail expands "right to travel"

a lot of what people are calling rural are fucking suburbs and exurbs and they deserve public transit as much as cities do and true rural communities also deserve easy access to transportation beyond cars as well.
January 1, 2026 at 3:16 AM
there's even the smattering of "bumblefuck" "no ones talking about your area" talk when it comes to public transit and that's fucking ignorant as hell. we should talk about it. public transit is not just a city thing because the popular distinction of urban and rural is absurd as hell.

making a rare quote post. if you scan the replies to this its a lot of disingenuous arguments about the nature and role of cars in american culture. Iowa, for example, had nearly 500 miles of light rail/tram/interurban transit at one point. it got dismantled just like transit in big cities
Taking away our cars can, should, and will be treated as a declaration of war upon rural America.
I find "America isn't really set up for it" to be an annoying rebuttal to any sort of proposal to reduce car dependency. Our leaders used policy to create a system of car dependency and we can sure as hell use policy to undo that. There are absolutely barriers, but do nothing is not a solution.

In 1994, the MetroCard replaced NYC subway tokens, bringing modernization to one of the world's oldest & largest transit systems. #NYCTransitHistory https://fefd.link/32sQe

2025 transit in review:
- 2,326 mi. total on the bike
- ~7.7 mi. per day, despite WFH with no commute
- 40 individual car trips for the year, combo of required vs. optional
- Avg. car trip was ~17.7 mi. long, which makes sense because a bikeshed of ~9 mi. means I'm probably just leaving town

Post a transit selfie from 2025

(Hopping on board the "not actually a selfie train" and there's nothing you can do to stop me!)

Important to note that while WH has highway locations for travelers, it doesn't have drive throughs and its city locations are disproportionately located near transit because that's the workforce.

I generally hate tipping culture but their staff consistently deserve far more than the usual %.

Imagine if your small town still had reliable and regular public transit so cars weren't a requirement, and right one third of the town by area wasn't taken up by parking lots.
Taking away our cars can, should, and will be treated as a declaration of war upon rural America.

Seattle is offering free rides on public transit today, other places might be too!

Thanks. Trying to figure out how I’ll deal with both of my parents not being able to drive, as they refuse to even move to a more walkable neighborhood neighborhood let alone another city, has made me even more supportive of public transit and denser cities (and suburbs).

I hope mass transit will lead to drive in train or subway movies ?
I just kinda think watching a movie in a big screen while waiting for the subway or train would be fun?

This takes a while and sometimes the app is glitchy.

I should plan ahead and buy paper passes but it’s almost always a last minute decision.

The bus driver told us today they’re getting rid of hotspot for this reason (yay!). Would really love tap-to-board like Go Transit in ON.

"Making it easier to own fewer cars can have a big impact, with New York City car owners typically spending $8,000 more per year on transportation than those solely using transit"

If you go out tonight, the last available Spokane Transit ride from the STA Plaza is at 12:49am (WB) and 12:51 (EB) for the City Line and 11:20pm for essentially all other routes.
