It’s that time of year again. The #Tipulidae ( #craneflies ) are out in large numbers and those big Araneus diadematus orb weaver #spiders are setting webs to catch them.

A unique-looking small spider with cream/black striped legs, a grey abdomen and a cream/black pattern on its carapace (head and shoulders). The spider clinging to the edge of a window ledge, with a white lumpy egg sac carried beneath her. Text from Wikipedia: Scytodidae catch their prey by spitting a fluid that congeals on contact into a venomous and sticky mass. The fluid contains both venom and spider silk in liquid form, though it is produced in venom glands in the chelicerae. The venom-laced silk both immobilizes and envenoms prey such as silverfish. In high-speed footage the spiders can be observed swaying from side to side as they "spit", catching the prey in a criss-crossed "Z" pattern; it is criss-crossed because each of the chelicerae emits half of the pattern. The spider usually strikes from a distance of 10 to 20 millimetres (0.39 to 0.79 in) and the entire attack sequence only lasts 1/700th of a second. [5] After making the capture, the spider typically bites the prey with venomous effect, and wraps it in the normal spider fashion with silk from the spinnerets. [6]

Hi can @britishspiders.bsky.social I’d this species for me. Very active and hard to photograph as it would not stop walking. Male? 30mm across the legs (approx), distinct pale yellow markings on the abdomen. Safely released!

Question for spider folk - I'm thinking this may be Oedothorax apicatus, but am I right? I tentatively got it to retusus or apicatus based on the epigyne and then apicatus based on shorter tibia IV spine, but I'm still new to spider ID so confirmation welcome, or correction if need be.

Recorded two females and four male Thomisus onustus from a site in west sussex first time ive found them at this site, last records are from Dick Jones in 1996 so great the species is still there and doing well.

🕷️ Heard a buzzing whilst I was watering the onions and found a battle was going on between a black slip wasp and a false widow spider (I think!).

🐝 If you look closely you can see the spider using its silk to wrap and immobilise the wasp.
