Then admits (!) that opinion is irrelevant (So why write it? Venting?)

{𝗮𝙅𝙎𝘿} My notes about the article… What Richburg is Trying to Do This is a classic opinion-column move: take a cluster of recent headlines and extract a single cautionary lesson (❝peace is a process, not an event❞). On that narrow aim, the column mostly succeeds: implementation and enforcement matter at least as much as signing ceremonies.1 1) The Headline Frames a Category Error: ❝Peace Deals❞ Vs ❝Partial Agreements❞ Richburg calls these ❝peace deals,❞ but the examples he describes are mostly ceasefires, frameworks, or staged commitments — not comprehensive settlements with credible enforcement.1 That matters because ❝unraveling❞ can mean two very different things: A signed, enforceable settlement collapsed because the guarantors didn’t follow through. A limited, partial arrangement never addressed the central combatants or the binding incentives — so violence continued. His Congo example strongly resembles (B): the Washington Accords are between states, while the armed group doing the seizing (M23) is not the same thing as the DRC or Rwanda acting as a unified ❝party❞ to a deal.3,5 The column is implicitly blaming ❝lack of follow-through,❞ but the more fundamental problem may be scope and party inclusion: if the deal doesn’t bind the gunmen, you don’t have ❝peace,❞ you have a press release. If Richburg wants to indict ❝flash,❞ he should first do the boring work: what exactly was agreed, by whom, with what verification and penalties? He doesn’t. 2) Congo Case: The Facts Are Strong, The Inference is Lazier Than It Needs to Be Factual backbone: The U.S. hosted and branded the Rwanda-DRC signing, including the very Trumpian renaming stunt (USIP → ❝Donald J. Trump Institute of Peace❞).2,3 Violence in eastern Congo surged anyway; M23 seized Uvira and mass displacement followed.4,5 That’s real, and it’s damaging optics. Analytical weakness: What the column doesn’t properly untangle is the difference between: Rwanda violating a state-to-state commitment (if it continued support), vs M23 acting outside the agreement’s structure, vs The agreement being designed in a way that predictably fails (because it excludes key actors or lacks enforcement). Outside reporting makes clear that the renewed offensive undercut the diplomatic push and that U.S. officials accused Rwanda of undermining the accord.4 That’s a sharper story than Richburg tells — and it cuts two ways: it might support his ❝follow-through❞ point, but it also supports a harsher conclusion: the deal may have been branding-first and leverage-light, or at least structured to let key spoilers keep spoiling.3,5 Bottom line: he has enough material for a real causal argument; instead he settles for ❝wars are hard.❞ 3) Thailand-Cambodia Case: He Uses Numbers, But Skips the Key Question — What Was Trump's Actual Role? Richburg reports renewed fighting after a claimed ceasefire, and he says Trump announced a new ceasefire that both prime ministers denied.1 That denial is corroborated by straight reporting.6,7 Here’s the critique: If leaders publicly deny a ceasefire exists, that’s not ❝unraveling❞; that’s non-existence (or at best a misrepresentation). Richburg leans into the narrative of ❝Trump solved it, then it fell apart,❞ but the harder, more revealing thesis might be: Trump claimed credit for something that wasn’t secured and then tried to claim it again. Reuters and AP describe serious escalation and massive displacement — but they also show this is a live war dynamic with third-party mediation (including China) and contested casualty claims.6,7 If Richburg wants to blame ❝flash,❞ he should distinguish between: a ceasefire with monitoring and mutual recognition, versus a politician’s social-media declaration. He almost makes that distinction — but doesn’t drive it home. 4) Gaza Case: The Column Gestures at the Real Obstacles but Doesn't Dissect Them Richburg says the Gaza plan stalled because no country will provide troops for an international force, and the ❝Board of Peace❞ is delayed.1 Reporting and analysis broadly support the idea that troop contributions are a bottleneck and that the plan’s later phases are politically and operationally hard.8,10,11 What he still under-explains is the central structural deadlock: The plan’s next phase hinges on Hamas disarmament and security control, which is exactly the kind of maximal requirement that tends to stall transitions.10,11 States are wary of sending troops into a legitimacy trap or an open-ended counterinsurgency — a point made explicitly in outside analysis.12 In other words: the ❝no troops❞ problem isn’t just bad follow-through; it’s rational risk-avoidance when the mission definition is politically radioactive and militarily ambiguous.12,13 If Richburg’s message is ❝patient diplomacy,❞ he owes readers one concrete sentence about what patience looks like here: phased security guarantees? UN command? a narrower mandate? a political horizon? He doesn’t offer it, so the Gaza section reads like: ❝hard part is hard.❞ 5) Historical Roots Section: Mostly Correct, But Functionally Generic He gives quick origin sketches for Central Africa, the Thai-Cambodia dispute, and Gaza.1 None of it is wildly wrong at a high level — but as analysis, it’s too blunt to be useful.

It is time now for Congress, and civil society more broadly, to discuss and begin more forcefully confronting Trump’s utter disregard for the law. The felon-in-chief’s crime spree started in the very early days of the Administration when they began illegally and unconstitutionally dismantling government agencies and programs, walking away from contracts, firing government employees, and stealing money appropriated for Congress for their own illicit purposes. It’s continued in his walking away from Senate ratified treaties with other nations; taking a billion dollar Qatari airliner for himself; the tearing down of the East Wing and his attempt to build himself a gilded ballroom; the savage assault on the rights and freedoms of people in communities across the country; sending innocent people to foreign gulags; the stealing of the USIP building from Congress, and then naming it after himself; the stealing of private government data about the American people; his attempt to sell out Ukraine and Europe to Putin for direct bribes; the dozens of War Crimes he’s committed in the Caribbean and the Pacific; the hundreds of illegal actions he has taken against the states and private institutions which have been reversed by the courts; the illegal renaming of the Kennedy Center, and his attempt to seize the public golf course adjacent to The Mall for his own venal purposes; the abuse of his pardon power, and the unprecedented corrupt we’ve seen; the levying of illegal tariffs and implementing Mad King “taxation without representation” once again; the ignoring the House subpoena for the Epstein files since July; and now in this outrageous, flagrant violation of the letter and spirit of the law he just signed that required him to release the Epstein files by midnight last night (I’m sure I am leaving something out).

The president’s name was installed on the building and signage around the US Institute of Peace, an independent agency, on December 3. USIP was also gutted earlier this year as part of the Trump administration’s efforts to shrink the federal government.
