Some terminology. When I say cane I’m thinking of something sized and balanced to bear weight one step at a time. A walking stick (or staff or wading stick) is sized and balanced for up to two steps at a time and may or may not bear weight. #woodworking #walkingsticks
An elderly man leans on a classic cane in size and shape. Its length allows one step before it must be lifted and placed in sync with the weaker leg. A pilgrim hikes with a classic pilgrim’s staff. It is long enough to allow two steps before it is picked up and placed. I sometimes refer to this as a “striding stick” as the pendulum motion allows you to set a steady stride. Fred Astaire dancing with a prop cane. Not my thing.

Stick insects, aka walkingsticks, are always fun to find. This was one of several I saw recently in Arizona. I like the way these insects hold their forelegs and antennae out together, to enhance their stick-ness. I think this one is Diapheromera arizonensis, the Arizona Walkingstick. 🌿🐙 #insects

A churchyard with beds planted lavishly and gaudily in brightly colour begonias, surrounded a granite gravestone with a pile of sticks in front of it. It's Greyfriars Bobby's grave. The sticks are for the dead dog. It is not my sort of thing. Also it was raining. View across a city square with grass fenced in by railings, and soft evening light. The brick building opposite has lots of white ghost sign writing on it: "fancy leather goods gardenwear walkingsticks" etc View across a street to a row of small shops. One is empty and has a partially overwritten ghost sign "aters and plastererszier'. The sun is reflecting brightly off a window to the right, just missing a strong vertical shadow casting the rightmost bit of the picture into darkness. The lighting effect overall is a bit uncanny. View down from above onto a massive railway station. In the rain.

Probably the biggest difference among walking sticks is the handle. The classic straight stick works fine, but I find it hard on my wrist. My favorite is the thumb stick, which allows a loose grip without it flying out of your hand. #woodworking #walkingsticks #sticks
The classic cane handle is a “L” or “T” at the top of the shaft. Good if you’re going to be putting weight downward, but not so good for striding. Some folks with arthritis find them uncomfortable. A ball fineal on a walking stick can provide a bit of counterweight and move the balance point up, as well as prevent the stick from flying out of your hand. For canes, they look good but don’t give a terribly good grip. My favorite is the thumb stick. With the thumb hung over the notch, you can relax your grip but still be secure. The classic pilgrim staff usually has two knobs, one on which to rest the hand and one on top, but is also illustrated with more or in different arrangements. It also served as a tent pole, lever, shoulder pole, and defensive weapon; you could write a dissertation on the variations.

Walkingsticks are masters of mimicry, and will even sway their bodies in the wind to appear more twig-like.

My favorite stickbug behavior is thanatosis, or playing dead ☠️ they commit to the stick cosplay HARD, splooting their legs out an laying stiff on the ground if scared

I found a pair of southern two-striped walkingsticks, aka devil riders, mating on my front porch columns tonight. The size difference between the two sexes is pretty large. They are really weird but cool bugs.

I don't have any recent mantis pictures on my phone right now, but I did find 8 stick insects a few days ago! I RARELY see even one, so I was absolutely flabbergasted. All these are from southern Illinois.
A stick insect clinging to a vertical wooden post with its head facing upwards. The insect is a vibrant shade of yellow-green. Its body is long, thin, and straight, like a twig. It has six long, spindly legs. The back and middle pairs of legs cling to the wooden post, while the frontmost pair is held out in front of the insect's small, roughly round head. This pose increases the illusion that the insect is actually a twig. A pair of Northern Walkingsticks (stick insects) in the act of mating. They are resting on the asphalt surface of a parking lot. The male is sort of riding on the female's back with the ends of their abdomens linked. The male is brown, shorter in length and more slender than the female, who is longer, thicker, and green. Both insects have straight, twiglike bodies, long spindly legs, small round heads with small eyes, and very long antennae.

A male twostriped walkingstick sits on the back of the female. They're long, light brown, with two dark stripes down their back and delightful slightly curved antennae. A little thicker than other walkingsticks. The males are half the size of the females but they're still just as much of a cool bug.
