Big W for UH baseball, beating TCU 3-2 to open the weekend. Stellar pitching from Paul Schmitz and Antoine Jean. Pinch hitter Coby DeJesus had a 2-out RBI double to score the go-ahead run in the bottom of the 7th. Houston has won 3 of their last 4 Big 12 games after opening conference play 0-3.

Tl;dr: Whitting down the list of who deserves protection and care is a waste of the energy we could be putting towards doing the protecting and caring. It's a distraction from the work that matters, the work of repairing the world. Don't fall for that shit.

I just came across this photo of my history master at school, 60 years ago. Philip Whitting was a famous Byzantine scholar and numismatist, and he saw promise in me when no one else seemed to. He pushed me across the line and got me to Cambridge. Greatly belated thanks, Philip.

The biggest culprit for this is still Chris Pezman for the comically bad decision to extend Whitting in the summer of 2023.

To be clear, the 2nd to last predicted finish is very fair for a team that wasn’t good in ‘24 and is largely new players. My issue (such that I have any) is D1 writes the same fall preview annually on UH (“intriguing hitters… Whitting knows he has to get UH back to NCAA level”) & nothing changes

I’ll settle for just the softball coach changing for obvious reasons, but I don’t think they’re going to extend Whitting and so he’s basically going into 2026 in the same conditions that produced catastrophically bad tennis/WBB/softball seasons.
