I’m desperately sad to hear that Tony Harrison has died. He was one of the first poets I ever saw read – in Leeds in the 1980s. But also, his was such a unique and powerful voice, and his blend of classicism and class consciousness remains potent - although he was much more than that as a poet.

Tony Harrison’s 1977 The Mysteries was a massive @nationaltheatre.org.uk hit that I missed. But I loved his adaptation of Victor Hugo’s Le Roi s’amuse, better known as Verdi’s Rigoletto. It was a flop but I’ve never forgotten it, esp. Richard Eyre’s staging and Bob Crowley’s set.
Tony Harrison RIP.

After you log in, instead of clicking to accept the terms, edit the URL (or open a new tab) to go directly to www.academia.edu/settings which (at least currently) is not giving the pop-up to accept the new terms. At the bottom of that page, you can delete your account.

Last month, Anas al-Sharif sounded the alarm on starvation in Gaza. Israel accused him of terrorism.

"We warned this felt like a precursor to justify assassination," said Jodie Ginsberg of the Committee to Protect Journalists.

Today he was killed in a targeted strike on a tent housing reporters.
