As pertinent today as it was in 1954 -perhaps even more so… and not just in the US either. Great to see this clip again 🙏💪

March 1954: Edward R. Murrow's most powerful anti-McCarthy broadcast - the one that took down Joe McCarthy. It is Murrow's most famous & most inspiring, 2-min speech

They’re never not at it -always looking for cunning plans to undermine the GFA -they know full well that the ECHR and GFA are inextricably linked. But it suits them to forget that in pursuit of populist English nationalism.

Chris Philp on R4 yesterday making 3 false statements about the ECHR and the GFA.
1. “The ECHR is mentioned only in the Multi-Party Agreement not the UK/Ireland Agreement.”. Wrong: the latter agreement requires the UK to support the former: they can’t be pulled apart like that.

Summary here by @joshuarozenberg.bsky.social of the so far unpublished but apparently “circulating” “legal advice” by Lord Wolfson to the Tory party. open.substack.com/pub/rozenber...

My memory might be playing tricks on me but I don’t remember previous contests being quite such a shit show? With the obvs exception of Brian Lenihan snr, circa 1990.

& clearly the direction of travel in HE is unsustainable.
Death by a thousand cuts for some (via VSS etc) but many other unis are already bleeding out, with VCs being appointed to manage end of life care.

Both Tories and Reform are aware of the importance of ECHR to the
B/GFA but seem fully prepared to jeopardise the latter and stability in Northern Ireland in pursuit of their delusional English nationalist wet dreams. #Brexit & the negotiations that followed proved that.

Just heard Chris Philp on BBC’s Today programme explaining why the Tories want to leave the ECHR. He claimed ECHR isn’t mentioned in Belfast Agreement - which is simply untrue. The UK govt agreed to incorporate it into NI law & give direct access to the courts (Strand 3). Why no BBC fact-check?

Up there with former NI SoS Karen Bradley saying she didn’t know the difference between unionists and nationalists! It’s the combo of chronic levels of ignorance with the haughty arrogance that makes it so funny. Time to get the Truss lettuce back out perhaps🤦‍♂️

no excuse for being this bad

‘Last time I checked, Ireland [sic] Northern Ireland, voted to leave’
[the EU]

I know she is about to get her P45, but the fact that the leader of the Conservative Party doesn’t know that Northern Ireland voted to remain in the 2016 #Brexit referendum is still an appalling display of ignorance.

I’m sure there must very good legal reasons why this PPE scandal involving Mone’s family wasn’t fraud and doesn’t merit a prosecution… there must be good legal reasons right?

Authors -it’s worth checking this to see if your work is included, -though seems there’s much less on the eligible works list here than work downloaded from LibGen or PiLiMi -though this might be the beginning of legal action over AI theft of copyrighted work, rather than the end. Good Luck 🤞

“The truth is that a Brit Card won’t fix the actual problems we face,” said SDLP leader Claire Hanna.

“Here in Northern Ireland, where people cross the border every day for work, family and study, imposing this scheme could be especially problematic.”
Rare unity at Stormont as all parties reject Keir Starmer’s ‘Brit Card’ digital ID plans
Northern Ireland’s political parties have delivered a resounding rejection of the Prime Minister’s controversial ‘Brit Card’ plans.
