Today's lecture: Personal space and crowding.

Key reading for the week is Neville & Reicher (2011) 'The experience of collective participation', but key reading for today is this classic from David Novelli:

Restricting eligibility as a wave is growing...

One of the reasons used for dropping coverage in younger age groups, especially kids, was a lack of demand...for a medicine they told everyone wasn't necessary...🤦‍♂️
Not an issue nowadays, it seems...

And by the way, hardly any serious researchers today would off 'de-individuation' as an explanation for anything!

Disruptive crowd behaviour back in the news again!
This time it's journalists saying it's a thing.
But crowd safety professionals say 'The overwhelming majority of events take place safely & securely, with no disruption, but those stories rarely make the news.”

Swearing, booing and spitting: is crowd behaviour out of control?
There was dismay after Rory McIlroy’s wife was hit by a beer at the Ryder Cup. But have crowds always been badly behaved, or is antisocial behaviour getting worse?

When disaster strikes it is encouraging that humans behave well towards each other - as though they are made in the image of someone loving and altruistic. In an emergency, we act with creativity and compassion.

Reading Rebecca Solnit's, A Paradise Built in Hell.
Cover of the book showing 4 human figures with drawings of leaves behind them.

Almost all popular use of the term 'cognitive dissonance' that I have seen get it completely wrong, but at the same time they tell us what's wrong with the theory: people in fact regularly tolerate contradiction (and only attempt to 'resolve' it when held to account).
