Het is dat ze geen watermeloen-button droegen, anders werd dit misschien wel antisemitisch genoemd.

To a different extent and accounting for their own context obviously, I think they play the same role although the NYT has been particularly egregious

Great this is being noticed but the framing in these stories that centre on Farage's own words rather than the issue itself tells you all you need to know about the appalling coverage of the far right and the role the mainstream media play in enabling its rise and mainstreaming

Maybe there's something in this Nigel Farage and Nathan Gill Russian bribes story....
Lots of stories about Nathan Gill and Russian bribes.

Such a strange choice of term when there are so many that are perfectly suitable...

Not really if understood as a discourse or even thin ideology as is most common in serious definitions

Things that are thought of as populism but aren't are an issue on the other hand and calling them populism conceals their nature
aurelmondon.bsky.social
While I think it is inaccurate to call the far right populist, I think that populism has a place on the left which has been prevented by it being associated with the far right
aurelmondon.bsky.social
I don't think I follow you

For me, populism is a form of discourse which constructs a people against an elite. I don't believe this is useful to characterise the far right, both in an academic and political sense as it's not only inaccurate but dangerous as it legitimises the far right

I think it points to a dying hegemony that has no idea or energy to tackle the many crises we are facing (and the system they uphold is responsible for)
aurelmondon.bsky.social
Haha, I don't know about that but hopefully that'll be useful!

I think the issue comes from the way these politics are framed in public discourse. At the moment, it delegitimises real alternatives while painting far-right reactionary elites as rebels (which is indeed ridiculous if you pay attention)
aurelmondon.bsky.social
Populism was never the issue

The issue was calling far-right politics "populism" which was not only inaccurate but euphemised and legitimised them as a so-called alternative to the status (while they aim to take the worst of it and push it further)

Yes, I'll keep banging on about this

Men like Piers Morgan have found women in trans women who it is socially acceptable to abuse.

Every time they do this stuff they are telling you how they'd treat cis women if they could get away with it.

If we want to understand the role played by mainstream media like the NYT, Guardian, Le Monde etc, we must look past the truly excellent investigative pieces they put out at times and think of the more mundane ongoing ideological work they do on a day to day basis with headlines like this

Should the New York Times be sold to Pennysaver and its editors sent to work in Amazon warehouses? It depends on who you ask.

The Guardian chooses once more to frame a story based on what suits Farage rather than what is actually going on...

If anyone still wonders why far-right politics are so mainstream, this is a good example

I called this out on #BBCQT last night and I'm calling it out again now.

He is gaslighting a nation.

My publisher’s been very patient. I’m not doing everything I said I’d do to promote this book (out in a few weeks) because I’m an organizer in a city under federal attack. My days are full and emotionally exhausting. Any help getting the word out means a lot. It's a book people need right now.

I think many did pay attention but felt Johnson and co were serving their interests better than even contemplating an alternative to this system which could only mean radical reform and a loss of privilege

Many others were not offered the opportunity to think or that opportunity was limited
