Polls are open!

Nashville, we have an important special election in one of the three congressional districts that now cover the city.

If you live in TN-7, you have an important federal accountability moment.

Wondering why Ben and Huw have not done an episode on Bari Weiss.

It's like Jack Benny's routine, where the robber says, "your money or your life!" and Benny can't decide.

There are some very strange things going on at the Library of Congress. I’m doing searches for news articles from the Civil Rights Era. Political cartoons. That sort of thing. They used to be easily found.

That stuff is VERY hard to find now. Things are missing, people.

Vandy AAUP on the Compact. Share widely!

"We join the @aaup.org National Leadership in urging the Board of Trust, Chancellor Diermeier, Provost Raver, & the Vanderbilt leadership to completely reject this Trump loyalty oath & any other that seeks to commandeer Vanderbilt’s institutional autonomy."

I see pieces like this a lot, often w/ a spin of lamenting cultural degeneration, but reading is a LABOR issue, it’s declined because so many people are working overtime or two jobs & employers expect after hours work. France has Earth’s highest reading rate b/c long lunch breaks & labor protections

Nice university you've got there. It would be a shame if something were to happen to it.

And before you know it, pragmatism calls for everyone to be a second-class citizen except cis-het Christian White men.
The Oprah "You get a car" meme. She's saying, "You lose your rights! And you lose your rights! And you lose your rights! Everyone but Christian white men lose their rights!"

Folks who have been paying attention will observe that there is a pattern in "reasonable moderate Democrat" rhetoric of first conceding to GOP demands to give ground on trans people's rights, which leads to calls to also give ground on women's rights, on POC rights, on immigrant rights, ...

Dr. @drjengunter.bsky.social's blog, "Bodily Autonomy Is Not A Bargaining Chip" is an excellent, forceful rebuttal to Ezra Klein's idea that Democrats should be prepared to throw women's rights under the bus to win some red state elections.

There's a minimum threshold of solar intensity (the Kombayashi-Ingersoll limit) necessary to drive a runaway greenhouse effect of the sort Venus experienced (where entire oceans evaporate). Sunlight is that intense for Venus, but the Earth is much too far from the sun to be vulnerable.

More persistent than nuclear waste. After 10,000 years, only 0.03% of radioactivity from high-level nuclear waste remains, but 25% of CO2 remains in the atmosphere, according to the Archer paper you cite.

Makes me think about this thread, which basically reflects on Ezra Klein's inability to acknowledge to Ta-Nehisi Coates, "I really screwed up with my Charlie Kirk column, and I regret it."

emilynussbaum.bsky.social
And I feel like Klein should just say, you know, I was very emo after the killing, I freaked out bc I’m a pundit too, in the public eye, it made me feel vulnerable, but in retrospect, I 100% should’ve written that column differently & thought *much* more deeply about how I described that guy…

Also he never acknowledged that Charlie Kirk spent his entire career calling people things far worse than "deplorable."

The fundamental point Ezra Klein appears make in his conversation with Ta Nehisi Coates is that Hillary Clinton did politics the wrong way by targeting a group of White people with the same rhetoric that Republicans like Charlie Kirk often use toward Black people, Jews, LGBTQ people, & immigrants.

It's harder if you live in a hilly area. When my daughter was a child she really wanted to bike places, but we lived on a 12% grade street in a hilly neighborhood, and that was too much for a young one.

Today, an adult, she lives car free in another city and gets everywhere by bike & transit.

The increase since 2022 from 20% to 43% of Ph.D. candidates reporting that they've experienced discrimination, harassment, or bullying in their programs is also very concerning.
A chart showing the number of Ph.D. candidates who have experienced discrimination or harassment in their program. 43%, including 47% of international students and 55% of ethnic minorities have. The leading forms of mistreatment are bullying (13% of students) and sexism or gender-related mistreatment (12%).

Klein's pragmatism is to accept current public opinion as fixed and work within its constraints, whereas Coates believes that his form of truth-telling has power to move public opinion, and thus alter what is practical.
