Lähiaikoina on tiettävästi odotettavissa törkyä tiedeyhteisöä kohtaan. Ketjusta muutama pikavinkki.

Q: Can soft moderation techniques (such as footnotes and blur screens) decrease engagement with misinformation on social media?

A: Yes, yes, they can.

Alice in Wonderland vibes in the lobby of Copenhagen Business School Dalgas Have! Happy to spend five weeks of my autumn here on a research visit. Looking forward to seeing old and new colleagues and friends, pushing some ideas further, and getting some writing done too!
A building lobby, white shades, black-and-white tiled floor, a fountain in the middle, and an abstract greenish painting in the background.

😅 Europe is a small continent? 🤔 I won't be on Brazil though, unfortunately!

Ohh! I'm in Copenhagen and this entire event popped up in my feeds only today! I hope it was a blast, but with these speakers I couldn't expect anything else 🤩

This research was made possible by three research initiatives: the MAPS project (Research Council of Finland), UnCoCo (Helsingin Sanomat Foundation), and our HSSH Institute-funded ERBIT-network, which provided the data. 🙏

Instead of reacting with minimal and insufficient adjustments to existing policies, as discussed in previous studies, platforms are also capable of leveraging shocks as preemptive opportunistic governance mechanisms to reinforce their prominent infrastructural and institutional position.

The platforms mobilized the pandemic as an opportunity to showcase their editorial capabilities and to position themselves as protectors of public conversation and central actors who uphold healthy online spaces, and ultimately, society.

Why reluctant? Because it's more image-building than concern about our information environment. Platforms’ conceptualization of health misinformation is intertwined with strategic goals to legitimate their existing content-moderation arrangements & to secure leeway as legitimate social actors.

The study mobilizes discursive legitimation theory to investigate how US-based major platform companies presented and justified their actions related to countering false and misleading health information during COVID-19 in their corporate blog posts.

Metrics-based perverse incentives are corrosive to scholarship as much as education — it’s a scourge across university systems

“The problem with gamification is that, over time, it can transform our values and the very nature of the activity such that we begin to lose sight of what really matters…”

Oikein! Tavallaan olen ajatellut että opettajan vastuulla on arvioida toteutuuko oppimistavoitteet, joten ei kai tässä muuta kuin menetelmät uusiksi niin että voidaan se varmistaa. Massaluennoilla isompi haaste.

Voi alma mater, mitä te oikein teette? 😭 Hieno iso kirjakauppa yliopiston kirjaston alla on ollut aivan erinomainen sivistystä tuleva konsepti.

#ICA25 I'm really looking forward to (and a little bit nervous for!) giving this year's Steve Jones Internet Research Lecture at 3pm. I hope you'll come hear about ways that the internet is good for us and bad for us at the same time, and what we can do as researchers to push towards the good. <3

At Tampere Uni M.Sc. Johanna Horppu is defending her PhD thesis that looks at privacy in a digital world from the perspective of sociomateriality. A cool and needed reconceptualization I can say as a pre-examiner!

What if privacy would be a default, and more adaptable to different social contexts?
