Depends on what you mean by "win out". Will there be room for iron air/flow/zinc/etc. batteries for some long duration storage applications? Sure. Will any of these technologies replace lithium ion for shorter duration applications? No. Maybe other tech will (sodium?), but not these.

Good for MIT. I am pretty sure my alma mater, The University of Texas will bend the knee because the Board of Regents is stacked with Trumpist toadies. But hopefully the other universities on the list, as well as all others, respond at least as strongly as MIT has done.

if you’re going to say people are afraid of another giant battery fire, you have to put as high as possible that there’s almost no facility like the one you’re citing anywhere in the u.s.

also, mention climate change. this story doesn’t say it once.

AP: More and more, big arrays of lithium-ion batteries are being hooked up to electrical grids around the U.S. to store power that can be discharged in times of high demand.

But as more energy storage is added, residents in some places are pushing back due to fears that the systems will go up in flames, as a massive facility in California did earlier this year.

Proponents maintain that state-of-the-art battery energy storage systems are safe, but more localities are enacting moratoriums.

I wonder if this will get even a small fraction of the press that the battery fire at Moss Landing received. Fires happen. But fossil fuel-related fires are far more common than fires at lithium ion facilities. And, a fire like Moss Landing will never happen again given design changes.

Typical American human age, say, 40? Urban dweller, household income $120k, w/ liquid net worth, outside 401(k), of $50k. I think $250k (net of tax) would be "life changing" for this person in terms of stress reduction. This "5x" liquid net worth ratio probably holds for many people.

Hard question to answer as it matters where a person is coming from. The first $20k in "extra" savings that someone has can be life changing. While $20m for someone else might be "meh". I think this is better expressed in terms of an increase that is multiplies liquid net worth by X.
