1/ There's a lot of talk these days about scientific neutrality and the role of academics in our planetary emergency

So I'd love to introduce myself by sharing some of my work on academic activism and talking a bit about my own shift from 'the lab' to the streets

Over 40% of corn grown in Indiana is used to make ethanol that cars burn. One acre of corn yields about 16,500 vehicle-miles per year of ethanol, which sounds high until you realize that one acre of solar yields about 2,700,000 vehicle-miles per year: 16,000% more driving for a given plot of land.

💚 A massive thank you to the ART FACTORY. They created so much, not only for XR, but for others in the ecology of movements too.

Their generosity, skills and #imagination helped others too - they were always willing to reach out, helping many groups to achieve #socialchange.

YouGov: Labour voters are significantly more likely to trust the Greens than Labour on the environment (72% vs 43%), poverty (49% vs 38%), keeping promises (45% vs 35%) and protecting minority groups (55% vs 47%).

It's why thousands are joining the Greens every day: join.greenparty.org.uk

All I want in life is to persuade everyone, when encountering politics & culture, to ask, "why are we talking about this?" I mean that very literally: anything you encounter on your screens reflects a choice. Someone covered that, talked about that, rather than the many other things out there. Why?

"One source told the Guardian they feared [the report] was being suppressed because the government was unwilling to face the issues raised."

If this is true it's the most flagrant dereliction of duty and breach of the social contract imaginable. Their job is to keep us safe, that's the deal

Agreed - I really hope they can make it work, because we'll need it. Atmospheric concentrations are already dangerously high and need to be brought down somehow

There's good reason why the oil and gas industry lobbies so hard for carbon capture - because it's the one 'climate solution' that wouldn't necessarily require shutting down the oil and gas industry

But it doesn't work. They need to be shut down

If the US says it's justified in attacking boats from Venezuela suspected of being part of a plan to get Americans hooked on harmful substances, then anyone else is justified in taking out LNG tankers leaving US ports openly part of a plan to get rest of world hooked on a harmful substance. Right?
justinmikulka.bsky.social
I recently wrote about how the US natural gas (methane) producers desperately need the world to get hooked on LNG imports. They need new markets for their gas. Why? From @ember-energy.org :

"global gas generation also fell (-6.3 TWh, -0.2%)"

The world is using less gas.

No sudden rupture is now required for the far right to take power in this country. For what we're seeing is a steady normalisation of extremists by the Conservative and Labour Parties, BBC, Telegraph, Mail and others. A shift once considered unthinkable beings to look acceptable, even inevitable.🧵

Has anyone else been dealing with some serious headline whiplash recently?

Even for those of us who follow #climate and #energy matters closely, it can be hard to know what the hell is going on!

So here's a thread to help climate communicators get a grip on how to deal with this 🧵
